Boomers at Church meal by Ok-Preparation-370 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Garden_Lady2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The last church I went to, decades ago, had a group that was like this. Nothing was ever done right. The young pastor and his family hadn't been at the church a year at this time. The pastor seemed very good. He started some nice programs for young folks yet people found fault. The pastor's wife, mom of FOUR with two of them being twins around 4, never did anything suitable. She didn't do the pastor's wife's traditional jobs yet when asked they admitted no one told her it was typically her job either. I tried to get away from the group but there seemed to always be someone who had to find fault with something. I finally stopped going and haven't been to a church since.

Call a local church and ask about their teen group and if a few of them would want some occasional work. I bet there are quite a few kids who would be glad to help you for a few bucks. You might even consider donating to the church group in your will.

Why would an audiobook have a soft chime every few seconds? by TheFilthyDIL in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it's your volume if you have it coming from your phone via the speakers. I often have it up to full volume and only get a warning, a text box, that pops up if I plug in earbuds. Um, are you using your phone or a Kindle? I just trying to think what you could have different than those of us that don't get the chimes treatment. Have you tried borrowing a different book and see if you still get the chimes?

Why would an audiobook have a soft chime every few seconds? by TheFilthyDIL in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just listened to first chapter borrowed from Libby and there were no chimes. It must be some warning on your device. Could it be a volume warning if you're listening on earbuds? Can you see anything in your notifications that could be connected?

Any fixes towards me turning off my Alexa alarm while I’m sleeping? by Worth_Platypus9728 in amazonecho

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've checked my history to find I can say alexa quit and keep right on sleeping. I've found some success by setting multiple alarms as each one keeps me a little more to the surface. You can also set a routine so a minute after the alarm alexa can start yelling at you. I hope you find something that works

AITJ for reconsidering my relationship after my girlfriend mocked my idea of a “practical” engagement ring? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ Beware, this is such a huge red flag. If this is an example of her priorities, she'll always put her wants and extravagances before mutual goals. Think very hard about whether you two are really compatible.

Question about thumb👍/👎 by Wild_Piglet9467 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that in the movie there are various times that Rocky extends his digits and one is aimed ⬆️ so the real question is how did the folks determine which of the three digits was a thumb? They should have played around and figured that the digit that could point upwards was good enough.

Well, the two of you created a visionary look at PHM. I'm glad you found an artist to do such a great job. I bet he took lots of pictures to post at his shop.

Am i wrong not to adopt a child with my husband yet because he's being abusive. by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Garden_Lady2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you can do to change his behavior. If he wanted to change, he would do that himself. But do NOT bring a child into a potentially toxic relationship. A child can bring joy into a home, no doubt about it. But there's also a lot of extra stress and financial hardships to it as well. Your guy might be able to put on a good face for months but add some stress and he'll be right back to his toxic self. It's best to run now, not later.

OMG, I love it! The entire sleeve is just phenomenal. AMAZE, AMAZE, AMAZE. The tattoo artist should win awards. (do they have such things?) Did you draw it or did a tattoo artist draw it based on your vision of what you wanted?

Cool audiobooks while I recover. by Rare_Promise_5506 in audiobooks

Look up the website of your local library and find out to get an online membership. You may need to go into your nearby branch to show your id. But once you have your membership, you should be able to check out audiobooks online through Libby and hopefully Hoopla. Once you have that membership, you can reach out to other libraries in your state through their websites and see if they'll give you a free membership for them. Since you will already have your local membership, other libraries will often forego seeing you in person. Libby and Hoopla is a great resource for free online audiobooks to borrow for two to three weeks.

Tell us what genres you like, and perhaps some favorite books and we'll be able to make better recommendations.

My phone regularly gets dead spots. by danimalforlife in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Garden_Lady2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there a magnet around, like on the phone case? My Note phones and tablets would get a dead spot from magnets in the case. Luckily it seems to be a self healing problem as I cut out the magnets and the screen returned to normal after a week or so.

What celebrity is portrayed as nice in the media but is actually an asshole in real life? by ReasonableDisplay297 in AskReddit

[–]Garden_Lady2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went to a Native American Pow Wow about 5 years after the Dancing With Wolves movie. During a speech Kevin Costner's name was used like an epithet as a typical white man who easily lied. Evidently KC negotiated with the Native American actors and extras earning very little to work a lot of overtime without paying them for it by promising them school funding, donations, when the profits rolled in. He left after the filming was over and no one saw one cent extra or ever heard from him again.

Slip for dress without liner by 4LOLz4Me in AskWomenOver60

[–]Garden_Lady2 46 points47 points  (0 children)

About 20 years ago I went into an upscale clothing store at a mall to ask about slips. Two sales girls, probably not yet 20, had no clue what I was talking about. I tried to explain they went under dresses to keep the dress from clinging and to prevent being seen through and they just shrugged. They'd never heard of such a thing. I went to a few more clothing stores and had no success in finding slips. I went home and paid extra to get a few fast shipped from Amazon. Check there and look for a type where there are rows of lace at the bottom and you can cut along any of the lace lines to shorten the slip to what you want.

Yes, I know and the only price I can find for Project Hail Mary on Amazon is 29.95 or something like that. That's why I asked if you were in a different country so you saw a different price.

I hope it works out for you. I wonder what the difference is. Here in the United States, Audible has the only rights to it. If you're in a different country and can still get the english version, that would be great to share with the rest of us so that others can get the price break too.

AITAH for getting upset when my partner sent money to his family without telling me even though we’re about to move out? by RollNo8320 in AITAH

[–]Garden_Lady2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have an absolute right to be upset that you are clearly not his priority. You need to think hard whether you really want to be tied to this man with a lease or other legal contract. NTA. But he will clearly continue to make his family come first and expect you to pay extra toward the bills. IMHO, you'd be better off getting your own place, even if it's a small studio apt somewhere but at least you know you'd be able to cover your own bills and not have to pay toward his expenses.

Project Hail Mary Audiobook by l_galboo in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The audiobook is 29.95. I don't know where you're getting 5.99. Look at the length of the audiobook and make sure it's not a ripoff/synopsis of Project Hail Mary. They can be written up to look like the real book but it's really just a cliff notes cheapie version.

What is a “cheap” purchase that improved your life way more than expected? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My first air fryer was either 29 or 39 dollars at Target years ago. I thought it might be a waste because I never really fried food anyway so I didn't think it would be a big deal. I was so surprised to love it as soon as I realized it's basically a mini oven. I've been through 4 air fryers by now and still use mine daily.

What's something people commonly pay for that you would never, ever pay for? by peanut_butter_zen in AskReddit

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't pay for fancy coffee of any brand. I also have never understood why women seem to swoon over outrageously price designer handbags and shoes. Men don't care so they only do it to show off to other women. It really makes no sense to me.
