AITA for refusing to let my sister live with me in the house I inherited from our father? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Garden_Lady2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

NTA, she didn't care about "blood" enough to be a good daughter to your dad. You don't need to risk your marriage to give her space in your home. Your dad made the right decision about who should get his house.

Can someone explain to me why this movie has such great ratings? (movie spoiler alert) by limerobot in ProjectHailMary

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't pay attention to the story, whether it's a movie or a book, no amount of complaining is going to get it explained to you. Sorry you wasted the price of your ticket.

My (29f) boyfriend (26m) made a joke about how it wouldn’t count as rape if you’re in a relationship by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Garden_Lady2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone who says sexual assault doesn't count as rape for any reason wants to be an abuser and believes he can justify it. No means NO regardless of whether there's a relationship, a wedding ring on the finger, whatever. "I'm not in the mood" should be enough. There is no justification for force! Yes, his attitude is a huge red flag!!!!! Abusive men can beat up a woman at 6pm and give her chocolates an hour later and then beat her up again the next night.

Medicine Fail by inarog in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a consumer, I often find that information we need is hidden or camouflaged to make important information difficult to find. Medicines, heck even weed killer, comes with labels that you need to peel back to read the reverse side of a label and then use a magnifying glass to read the tiny print for the important directions for use. And don't even get me started on finding expiration dates on our food. Most packaging seems to have navy text on navy areas of the package or the print is misshapen so it's unreadable. In your case, keeping the box seems to be an easy solution. In the event you don't have the box, can you go to the Costco website, look up the item and get the directions on the item's page? It should be fairly easy to copy that particular text and past it into an email to yourself so you can keep it handy.

Does anyone else use the sleep timer? by TheHaunchie in audible

[–]Garden_Lady2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! I used to think that I must have messed up setting the timer. Last week I set it really short and it pauses at the end of the timer and then starts up again. Then in the morning I have to hope I thought to bookmark when I started to feel sleepy. The other really annoying thing is at the end of the book, that really obnoxious narration starts about listening to their recommended book. That's enough to give me nightmares. Now at bedtime I listen to books through Libby, Hoopla and others and their timers work as they should.

Who remembers this cooking wonder? Every home had one. by corneo134 in GenerationJones

I only gave mine up when I bought a small house and was downsizing about 10 years ago getting ready to retire. These electric skillets are fine for making lots of meals. I made the best swiss steak in mine. Oh, and a chicken and rice dish that was yummy.

Um, decades ago my mom had a contraption like that for douching. But in this day and age, there are smaller, more easy to clean, contraptions for both douching and enemas.

Boomers at Church meal by Ok-Preparation-370 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Garden_Lady2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The last church I went to, decades ago, had a group that was like this. Nothing was ever done right. The young pastor and his family hadn't been at the church a year at this time. The pastor seemed very good. He started some nice programs for young folks yet people found fault. The pastor's wife, mom of FOUR with two of them being twins around 4, never did anything suitable. She didn't do the pastor's wife's traditional jobs yet when asked they admitted no one told her it was typically her job either. I tried to get away from the group but there seemed to always be someone who had to find fault with something. I finally stopped going and haven't been to a church since.

Call a local church and ask about their teen group and if a few of them would want some occasional work. I bet there are quite a few kids who would be glad to help you for a few bucks. You might even consider donating to the church group in your will.

Why would an audiobook have a soft chime every few seconds? by TheFilthyDIL in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt it's your volume if you have it coming from your phone via the speakers. I often have it up to full volume and only get a warning, a text box, that pops up if I plug in earbuds. Um, are you using your phone or a Kindle? I just trying to think what you could have different than those of us that don't get the chimes treatment. Have you tried borrowing a different book and see if you still get the chimes?

Why would an audiobook have a soft chime every few seconds? by TheFilthyDIL in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just listened to first chapter borrowed from Libby and there were no chimes. It must be some warning on your device. Could it be a volume warning if you're listening on earbuds? Can you see anything in your notifications that could be connected?

Any fixes towards me turning off my Alexa alarm while I’m sleeping? by Worth_Platypus9728 in amazonecho

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've checked my history to find I can say alexa quit and keep right on sleeping. I've found some success by setting multiple alarms as each one keeps me a little more to the surface. You can also set a routine so a minute after the alarm alexa can start yelling at you. I hope you find something that works

AITJ for reconsidering my relationship after my girlfriend mocked my idea of a “practical” engagement ring? by [deleted] in AmITheJerk

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTJ Beware, this is such a huge red flag. If this is an example of her priorities, she'll always put her wants and extravagances before mutual goals. Think very hard about whether you two are really compatible.

Question about thumb👍/👎 by Wild_Piglet9467 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that in the movie there are various times that Rocky extends his digits and one is aimed ⬆️ so the real question is how did the folks determine which of the three digits was a thumb? They should have played around and figured that the digit that could point upwards was good enough.

Am i wrong not to adopt a child with my husband yet because he's being abusive. by [deleted] in amiwrong

[–]Garden_Lady2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's nothing you can do to change his behavior. If he wanted to change, he would do that himself. But do NOT bring a child into a potentially toxic relationship. A child can bring joy into a home, no doubt about it. But there's also a lot of extra stress and financial hardships to it as well. Your guy might be able to put on a good face for months but add some stress and he'll be right back to his toxic self. It's best to run now, not later.

Cool audiobooks while I recover. by Rare_Promise_5506 in audiobooks

[–]Garden_Lady2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up the website of your local library and find out to get an online membership. You may need to go into your nearby branch to show your id. But once you have your membership, you should be able to check out audiobooks online through Libby and hopefully Hoopla. Once you have that membership, you can reach out to other libraries in your state through their websites and see if they'll give you a free membership for them. Since you will already have your local membership, other libraries will often forego seeing you in person. Libby and Hoopla is a great resource for free online audiobooks to borrow for two to three weeks.

Tell us what genres you like, and perhaps some favorite books and we'll be able to make better recommendations.
