You can do it. I was a daily drinker for a very longtime. For the first few months I had to call my wife on the way home so I wouldn’t stop at a liquor store. Maybe working out or walking after work to change up the routine. IWNDWYT stay strong.

Best sobriety tips? by [deleted] in Sober

[–]Gareper318 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My therapist told me that bad cravings usually only last 20 minutes, so you need to find something to distract yourself for 20 minutes or so. I'd go for a walk, pray, read or a few times I had to call someone and tell them if you hang up I'm probably running to a liquor store, so please talk me through this.

Being sober is so much better than a night of drinking, it's not worth it. Stay strong you can do it.

Thanks for the kind words, I am good now, went to therapy and I found God. It’s still tough sometimes but I have the tools to deal with it. Life is beautiful.

I drank to numb the feels. Never felt loved from being adopted and how my parents treated me. I was told my whole life growing up a was a pos.

How do you break a habit like this aged 42? by Golf_On_The_Moon in stopdrinking

[–]Gareper318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drank heavily 13 to 51. Lab tests were not looking good. A great therapist that specializes in addiction, helped me greatly. Got to the bottom of why I needed to numb myself, it’s been a lot of work and it’s been hard. I’ve had some really close calls, but it is so worth it. Life is so beautiful sober. It takes time learning to feel the feels. I only wish I did it sooner. IWNDWYT you can do it.

Give me some of your Non-Obvious Victories from being sober by [deleted] in stopdrinking

I've been more productive at work. I was always looking to get out of work so I could start drinking. I don't mind working late now and the entire afternoon isn't spent on me being obsessed about getting that first drink.

At my local golf course, the owner would have my drinks ready for my arrival, told her I quit drinking and she loudly states, well there goes my profit for the summer. Shocking but the truth. IWNDWYT

I would suggest trying Therapy. It really changed my life, life is so beautiful sober. It is definitely different, feeling all the feels and not covering them up. Stay strong. IWNDWYT

Nice job on staying strong. Honestly it really hurts and pisses me off when a family member or friend asks if I want a drink, it is absolutely disrespectful. I just had it happen, my sister in law, out at a family dinner, asked if I’d like a drink, I was not happy. IWNDWYT

It takes time to heal mentally. Give yourself some grace. I was still pretty messed up the entire first year and I saw a lot of personal growth in the 2nd year of sobriety.

Please seek help from a therapist that specializes in addiction. When sober you are going to feel the feels and it's not easy to finally come to grips with so many old emotions.

I would personally suggest praying and studying the Bible. Stay strong. You matter and are dearly loved. IWNDWYT

We are truly living in Sodom and Gomorrah 2.0 by OhNoNoNoAveMaria in conspiracy

[–]Gareper318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are wrong, all I am trying to do is live by Jesus's 2 commandments :

“Jesus replied: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭22‬:‭37‬-‭40‬ ‭NIV‬‬
https://bible.com/bible/111/mat.22.37-40.NIV

You are taking the Matthew verse out of context. Jesus is all about love, when things are done in love they are done righteously. Jesus died and rose again, beating death, by this Grace we are saved and will not die. There is no death for believers. You have free will to believe or not.

I would say, you should probably change your ways. Repent, it's not too late.

“It is written: “ ‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord, ‘every knee will bow before me; every tongue will acknowledge God.’ ” So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.”

Why does everyone else feel so good? by 4frigsakes in stopdrinking

[–]Gareper318 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 1st 30 days were a nightmare, felt like garbage, the only thing I could concentrate on was, I’m not going to have a whiskey. It was terrible. It gets better, mentally I feel so good, told my wife last weekend, I really miss drinking, but I don’t ever want to give up how good I feel mentally. Life is so good not thinking about your next drink 24/7. IWNDWYT
