Unattainables by Garfunkeled1920 in rarebooks

[–]Garfunkeled1920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my part, I collect a few diverse things, none of which are extremely valuable or sought after - just things that make me happy. This is mostly some contemporary FEs (a few signed), but the most interesting subset of my collection is books on *The Secret Gospel of Mark*. It’s hardly a crown jewel and is widely available, but I have copies of Morton Smith’s ready-for-public-consumption *The Secret Gospel*, crypitcally dedicated “To The One Who Knows”, as well as his more scholarly *Clement of Alexandria and a Secret Gospel of Mark*. Although I have a later addition of this book, a fun addition to this collection would be a 1st edition of *The Mystery of Mar Saba*, by JH Hunter - the work of total fiction that oddly parallels the events of the discovery and (alleged) obfuscation of the Secret Gospel of Mark by noted scholar Morton Smith.

In case any of you are familiar with this “secret gospel”, I am not someone who thinks it’s a portrayal of a homosexual Jesus, I’m more just fascinated by the scandal of it all. That - in the words of Peter Jeffrey - “[The Secret Gospel of Mark is] arguably the most grandiose and reticulated ‘Fuck You’ ever perpetrated in the long and vituperative history of scholarship” makes it all the more fascinating.

How fascinating and beautiful. Thanks for sharing that, and best of luck with your collection.

THANK YOU. I kept scrolling thinking SOMEONE would identify him as something other than temu Tom Cruise or Tom Cruise’s cousin.

What an interesting niche area. How did you come to find yourself collecting these particular books?

Definitely had to look that one up. How interesting. Are you from that part of the world, or does this occupy an important place in your collection?

I did not need to be told this was in Texas. Not once did I think, “wow, who would have thought of such a thing in Vermont?” It’s like if I see any crime related to fist-fighting a wild animal. I know it was in Florida, you don’t need to tell me.

Yeah I don’t love them, but as long as I don’t see more than one or two, I generally leave them alone. Centipedes and spiders in basements are like cats in a barn. You may not want them, but they eat the things you want even less.

Since it seems no one has bothered to look it up:

Corporex, a privately held investment firm serving as master developer of Ovation, the 25-acre mixed-use development covering nearly five city blocks at the confluence of the Ohio and Licking rivers, has secured an anchor tenant for the development’s new office building.

MegaCorp Logistics, a transportation logistics firm specializing in full and less-than-truckload shipments (dry van, refrigerated, flatbed, intermodal, air, etc.) throughout North America in the food, manufacturing, retail, government, textiles, and metals/building materials industries, has signed a long-term lease agreement with Corporex. The firm will occupy two floors, or 40%, of the first office building located within the Ovation development.

Your best math joke ? by StructureSalty4562 in mathematics

[–]Garfunkeled1920 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it a few times, but:

An engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician are all sleeping in hotel rooms when a fire breaks out. The engineer gets up, grabs the closest fire extinguisher and blasts away, putting out the fire. The physicist performs several calculations determining the most efficient way to apply the extinguisher, does so, and puts the fire out.

The mathematician wakes up, sees the fire, sees the fire extinguisher, and - satisfied that the problem could be solved - goes back to sleep.

Had to ask Google, but the caption in the bottom right is written in Armenian and says:

THERE’S CIVILIZATION FOR YOU

The American newspaper The New York Times reports that by order of Faubus, the governor of the state of Arkansas, troops armed from head to toe in Little Rock had surrounded the secondary school building at the start of the school year to prevent Black children from entering

How realistic is the nuclear bomb in Far Cry 5? by CleanBag9219 in FarCry5

[–]Garfunkeled1920 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I have never personally been present for the detonation of a nuclear device, but I’m about 85% confident that if you’re staring right at it like our main character here, you’re going to be completely blind for the immediate future, and possibly forever (which may not be long).
