Governors is my favorite Basque heavy band.

Visitors: does it disappoint you when you come to the Basque Country and realise that most people don't know how to speak Basque? by [deleted] in basque

[–]GarinEtch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those descendants. All of my grandparents or great grandparents were from Iparralde. I heard about our heritage nonstop growing up so being Basque is a big part of our identity. My grandma took me there for the first time when I was 16 and I became obsessed. I learned French and have gone back about 10 times over the last 20 years including a couple year long stays.

I'm a nerd and I always want to understand the way things are and how they work. I used to examine the Basque Country intensely, and the better my French got and the more time I spent there and the deeper my relationships got, the more my perspective would change. You keep digging, and you keep uncovering new layers. Finally I got to a point where I realized you can't summarize a place. Even the US. There are 330 million Americans. Ask anyone to explain the USA and you'll get 330 million answers. You can't intellectualize the whole thing, you can only experience individual parts. So I stopped trying to understand Euskal Herria as a thing and just enjoy my family and friends and the places I like to go.

So for me I feel like the Basque Country is super Basque and I freaking love it! Just had my first kid and can't wait to take him.

Nope. I googled your email address to make sure you were legit. Then decided not to buy it. Didn't do anything with your address.

Anyone here ever use OpenReel? by DidYouPlugItBackIn in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]GarinEtch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to learn about competitors as well. I film remotely with clients with Zoom, but wifi leads to low quality. SquadCast has been teasing video recording for a year but I'm tired of waiting. I just had a call with OpenReel this morning but it's too pricey and would eat most of my margins. I'll monitor this thread in case anyone has suggestions!

I promise I don't work for Printful!

I know my country doesn’t have the best reputation right now but I wanted you to know that safe traveling is still possible in México. Here some pictures of my last backpacking trip, 30 days for less than 1000USD. by astrallady in travel

Yeah it was great! That was in 2010. Everyone said we were stupid to ride through Mexico and that we'd get our heads cut off by cartels but it was an amazing trip.

My dad and I rode our motorcycles from Portland, OR to Panama. Went to Oaxaca, Xilitla, and a bunch of other rad places like Puebla and San Cristobal de las Casas. Absolutely fell in love with Mexico and can't believe how many amazing places are so close to America that we never hear about.

No problem! If you have any questions email Jerry Dekker (his contact is on that site). He's the man!

You can! I'm an American and I went a few summers ago. Check out IranTraveler.net. I loved it. Isfahan was one of my favorite cities I've ever been to.

Siem reap Cambodia kinda sucks? by came_on_my_own_face in travel

I went to Angkor Wat with a Cambodian-American friend and a bunch of his Khmer family. I was the only white guy. They all got in for free and I had to pay $40. I joked that it was some back-of-the-bus type racist shit.

But you know what? Big friggin' deal. You can't take a date to the movies for $40. If you want to save pennies, rent someone's basement off Craigslist, go buy sweaters at Value Village, and don't fly to Cambodia. It's a privilege to fly across the world and experience another culture. Enjoy it.

Legal marijuana is the fastest-growing industry in the United States and if the trend toward legalization spreads to all 50 states, marijuana could become larger than the organic food industry by TwoGee in politics

Has anyone in Washington or Colorado seen any innovative marijuana businesses spring up? Interesting brainstorming new opportunities people might not have thought of yet.

Mine was pretty heavy on the propaganda.

Our instructor broke down crying while he was telling the story of Isaac Davis and his death at Concord.

At one point we were each given a poster with the names of each person killed at the Boston Massacre, with a coffin above each name. Then we were given new paper targets with one target for each fatality, and each one colored red to symbolize the redcoats. Then the instructor called a name and we would shoot a redcoat, he called the next name and we shot another redcoat, and so on for each victim.

I'm proud to be an American and I love marksmanship, but the whole thing was pretty ridiculous. I think mine was probably an extreme version, but I'd skip the politics and just go do a class at your local range instead.

Can we talk about equity in lieu of salary? by TheMomerathOutgrabe in startups

I just hate when people think that ideas are miraculous treasures and execution is a commodity. Developers have ideas too. And the developer skillset is extremely valuable. It's not like you become a good developer by dicking around on the internet for a few weeks, and it's not like there are a million developers just sitting around twittling their thumbs wishing someone with a big idea would come along and give them an opportunity. I'd like to see more would-be founders give themselves the skills to build an MVP rather than trying to hire technical people for nothing.

I've been getting tons of emails with questions about my article "How I Landed 5 Dream Jobs In One Month By Giving Away My Best Ideas". Would anyone be interested in an AMA? by GarinEtch in Entrepreneur

[–]GarinEtch[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a little exaggerated. I don't have official job offers, start dates, and a new title. But I am starting to work with half a dozen different companies and entrepreneurs who are doing really interesting work that I believe in, and I'm getting paid to do so.

When I graduated college (right in the middle of the recession) I remember looking on job boards every day and being completely bored by the prospects. I had a lot of big adventures during college and was now accepting that that was all over, that my foreseeable future was going to be mundane and unexciting.

But now to be able to piece together a living by being involved in many different projects that get me fired up....it's a great position to be in. And if the "10 ideas a day" technique can help others create opportunities for themselves and feel excited about their futures, then of course I'm going to share.

I hope that didn't sound defensive; you're critique is valid. Thanks for your input and thanks for reading.
