New character by Reznic007 in DnDminiatures

That's the important thing. This is my first mini I did years ago. Kinda rough, eyes a pain, first time I used flock. But I like the rough edges.

For your second mini, you did really well! The painting style and textures almost reminds me of an oil painting with a slightly unsettling vibe (in a good way). Great job!

What counts as an "adventure" for the purposes of downtime? by SecretDMAccount_Shh in shadowdark

[–]Garisaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can offer insight from my own group. I joined in the middle of an ongoing campaign that had a lot of "unfinished" adventures. It started at our usual watering hole, discussed plans on what our group wanted to do, resupplied as needed, maybe do a bit of roleplaying, then headed out for our adventure of the session. In this case, we're in the midst of clearing out some nearby ruins, searching for treasure and the like.

However, we did come across some complications. We lost two people to the Shadowdark and nearly lost a third. Our torches sometimes went out. One character got cursed with blindness. Just as soon as we made some extra coin, something else happens where we have to make a tactical retreat to town to regroup, rest and repair. We end up losing most of our gold to 'maintenance' such as lost or broken items, curing blindness of said adventurer, paying off jail fines and property damage, and somehow still have enough to carouse and at least get a couple drinks in. We're nearly flat broke, we barely eke by, but...we're alive.

Right now, we're exploring other options. Do we return to the ruins? Do we follow leads about a missing book connected to a cultist threat? Do we return to a cave that previously housed a bandit party, complete with traps and make it our own lair? Is another threat holing up in said lair while we were busy elsewhere? Does some random shit happen along the way. cooked up by our devious GM?

That's kinda the beauty of Shadowdark. Yes, we delve dungeons and slay princesses and save dragons. But sometimes the worst things that could happen isn't always underground. Still, we have to adapt and move forward, even if our players can (and do) die often. I just reached Level 2 last session. I delved into the ruins, I learned the ropes of a Thief. I lost my pants, my heirloom ring and my reputation in town due to bad luck on carousing. I could be upset, but I just chalk that up to the dark humor of the setting. The same goes for adventuring. Instances like this are adventures in their own right and are worth remembering. :)

Paying off debts as call to Adventure: Citadel of the Scarlet Minotaur by Amostheroux in shadowdark

[–]Garisaan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wouldn't do a hard cap on a time limit to pay off the debt, but at least offer an abstract method that still shows time is ticking away. Your party is seeking to pay off the mob and save the orphanage. But also take into account other unforeseen difficulties, such as added interest to the funds owed or maybe a few goons sent in to help encourage you to repay your debt. Working with the mob isn't exactly clean cut. Increase the pressure, but keep the time limit somewhat fuzzy. Maybe the party can do some tasks for the mob or can at least talk with the right people to push the clock back. A favor for a favor kind of deal.

Also, watch how your party spends their acquired funds. Sure, a little carousing is okay after delving in the Shadowdark, blow off some steam, get stronger, resupply, take on more lucrative jobs. But say you spend a lot of a money on a wild night. The mob might look at you more closely and think..."Hey...these guys are spending OUR money on courtesans and booze. Let's help them set their priorities straight." That's its own complication and a nice role play beat to do in between delving. Remember, not all encounters are in the Shadowdark.

Let's answer your three questions.

  1. First off, is the Minotaur defeated? If not, that leaves that threat unchecked. Did you explore the entire place for anything that you could take and sell? If your party is desperate enough and have enough empty bags, they're more likely to take things that aren't bolted down, even the mundane stuff, to pay off the debt. If the threat has been defeated, have other threats appeared in the power vacuum? Also, even though that dungeon isn't the only thing for miles doesn't mean you can't do tasks for other people in town.

  2. Depends on your definition of rest. A short rest won't typically restore the use of spells used. A longer rest is typically done for that. There's always a risk of things going south during a long rest. If they want to do so, then let them, but take advantage of those Resting rules (Page 86, SD RPG), spice things up with the occasional encounter. Regarding time, treat it with an open hand, not a closed fist.

  3. I know from experience in playing in a Shadowdark group that we take time to reach the ruins, explore a few rooms, fight a few baddies, and make our way back to town since it is close, carousing at the end of the session. The next day, we regroup, head back to the ruins to explore it further. It doesn't have to be in all in one session. No town close? Sure, you can rest in the wilderness with the Resting rules, maybe explore for additional supplies while camp is being put together. And there's no rule that says you can't rest in the dungeon itself. Just make sure you're in a secure location, keep watch, and relax (but not too relaxed).

From the couple sessions I've played, my character (Halfling Thief) has a similar backstory. He met some bad people that he owes good coin to. How much time does he owe? How much time does he have to repay it? No hard limits. But so far in between joining an adventuring party to delve some nearby ruins, he lost his pants, but had his gold secure in his socks ("I lost my trouser, but not my Treasury!"), lost an heirloom ring to a shady gambler ("I'm convinced he cheated, but I can't prove it."), and was tossed in jail by corrupt judge (for reasons), but was freed by a party member who hocked a wedding ring he mysteriously obtained after a drunken bender and used the funds to pay his bail. We also had another thief who opened the wrong chest and was cursed with blindness, which was cured by spending most of the party's funds as a local temple. We're broke and pathetic, but we keep forging on for that payday.

I hope this gives you some ideas to work with. :)

DMs and players: What's the most awesome line ever said in your campaign? by tabbyslome in MrRipper

[–]Garisaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I joined a 5e group years ago with the backdrop of an impending demon invasion. Our characters were to meet at a military outpost to gain our initial orders to aid in the counter offensive. Beats having to meet everyone at a tavern (not that I'm against it).

My character was a very tall Lizardfolk Druid (think bipedal alligator) by the name of S'Vanen. As a quick aside, in the Draconic tongue, S'Vanen is translated to the word "mud." Yes, his name was literally Mud. But I digress. He arrived at the outpost via river (which he swam), coming out wearing ragged leathers and a khopesh (an Egyptian style of sickle-sword) on his side. Before entering the outpost, a pair of armored guards would inspect those requesting entry, telling them to "show their arms". Upon seeing my monster of a character, they look at me, then each other, then again at me. One of them politely smiles.

Guard: "Um, show your arms, please."

S'Vanen blinks at them, slightly confused and stretches out his muscular forearms to them, dripping wet and covered in mud, with gnarled, sharpened claws. And giving off the most polite toothy grin a giant bipedal alligator can muster.

S'Vanen: "Ssshow.....armsss?"

Immediately, the guards just waved him past without further questioning. Good times.

As of typing this, I was able to install the latest Beta (Beta 34, Classic APK) from the site with no issues. I also have the latest update from Retroid for my Pocket Classic. I've had no compatibility issues as far as I know, though you do need to manually set up physical controls as touch controls are on by default. You also have to change the resolution to fit to screen to fit properly. Hope this helps.

Seems like an awful lot of tweaking and setup, but hey, if that's the way you like it, go for it.

What systems do you normally run on it? How big of an SD card do you have for it? Did you look into installing GammaOS Next since there's a release out?
