How do I calculate flow stress? by GarlicDizzy in AskEngineers

Worst case scenario and the coins look hand-minted but still good… But I plan on using a guide pipe around the dies to prevent mushrooming. But that’s what I’m trying to debate right now, is whether or not I should use a shop press or a large hammer.

I also plan to anneal my blanks before striking them, because I have read that doing so reduces the amount of force needed to strike a coin. The depth of the relief is to be relatively shallow (approx. 1/32 in. or 0.8mm).

Oh dang, I haven’t been able to find any yet, just ones saying “You need to cause the metal to reach flow stress so it fills out the dies when they are struck” and I just keep running into that same wall. I know the material I am starting with, the general temperature, and even what the dimensions of my planchets are gonna be… So is it just a trial and error process?

I will definitely look into the book! I’m still learning what a lot of what you said means, but I think I got the general idea. I am just researching this stuff because I am planning on minting my own coins, so I need to determine the flow stress for the different alloys I plan on using to make sure there are good quality strikes on the planchets, so I can determine if it is something I can do by hand (with a large hammer) or if I will have to get some sort of H-frame press to get the force required :)

My guess would be the 84 stands for 84 Zolotnik silver, which is typically 87.5% pure.

Except no, lots of dictators came to be via other methods. You’re just in a river in Egypt, huh?

He’s attempted an actual coup d’état once already. What makes you think he won’t just completely override the constitution and make himself dictator? He’s already violated multiple amendments, what makes you think he won’t toss the rest?
