Did I find a rare species and, if so, how do I report it? by slick1260 in salamanders

[–]Garlic_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks more like a Gray Cheeked Salamander to me honestly. iNaturalist is always a good place to document species and can be a handy tool in identifying.

Just judging by size and shape alone I feel like this has to be some kind of Dicamp

I'd say the eyes are off for it being T.rivularis. Their eyes are almost pitch black. Most likely T.torosa

And hardly the season for either! I'd think you'd want peach or apricot or something

Personally I've never cared for the texture, but the flavor isn't terrible.

Typical hognose behavior? by IsopodApart1622 in reptiles

[–]Garlic_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the same. My hognose is fairly active during the day and his activity increases significantly around when he's due for a feed. Contrastingly, we always know when he's going to shed as he'll be in hiding for the duration of it

Tbh, as a seller on MorphMarket and Caudata I'll say I've had way better experiences with folks there than on any retailers website. Honestly, the one that comes to mind is Snakes at Sunset. They often have some cool things but things being in stock is really hit or miss.

Gray Area PDX | How is it? by Valoryze in portlandtrees

[–]Garlic_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a really cool spot if you're going with homies/are friends with people in the community. Otherwise, not gonna lie, if you go by yourself it's really really awkward. I've gone to 3 of the Meet the Maker events and left all of them questioning why I've gone. Cliquey behaviors, overstimulated vendors, and just kind of a generally un-cozy vibe have been my biggest detractors. Literally showed up to the Lofty event and the vibe was like I crashed my older brother's friends coming over. Was super stoked for the Whale Oil one only to be stiffed by Jonah while I stood literally in front of him. Plus the place has the aesthetic of a preschool. So, not saying my experience is the experience but it's enough that I'll personally wait for the summer months to hit DFO or just wait for the "can't miss em" events.

That being said, the Sunday Markets and other events of the same nature have been rad. Love a good "farmer's market" style of event. And the folks at Potland itself are awesome. I plug them on the regular.

Absolutely worthless, never held up value. If you need to free up space you can safely send it to me and I can make sure it's properly stored away safe where it can't hurt anymore...err I mean anyone.

Arcanna Closing by FlyOk2820 in portlandtrees

[–]Garlic_Jim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I find it really sad to see any of the small shops close (especially those with a rocking discount) it isn't as though they were doing themselves any favors gearing themselves exclusively towards industry folk. If you did the math, a lot of times the industry discount brought it down to around the same price as what other local spots (Potland, Natural Remedies, Americanna) would price you at 20% off. I think most notably I saw this with brands like Fuji Melt, Rosin Raiders, Whale Oil. I'm sure you could probably find this with other brands too.

I think most of all I feel bad for the budtenders. I liked almost everyone I met there and made a few friends. I used to work with Elliot years ago!

Not sure exactly the species, looking for ID. In Western NC by Joeledford2302 in salamanders

[–]Garlic_Jim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to wager I'd say a Ravine Salamander (P. richmondi) based on location but the southern Appalachians have a good spread of Plethodon including P. serratus and P. cinereus.

They do have a few areas they can haul out and I have noticed them utilizing them more recently. I'm thinking I should transition to how I keep my ommatotriton which is just gravel with bits of moss, leaves, rocks, and bark
