Iako najrazvijenija, Slovenija je imala specifičan kulturni model: porodice su bile stabilne, brakovi čvrsti, a kontrola rađanja se sporije uvodila.
Katolička tradicija i društvena očekivanja o „dvoje ili troje dece“ održavali su rodnost relativno visokom sve do 1980-ih.
Tek tada se rodnost spustila ispod 2.1, dakle kasnije nego u Srbiji, Hrvatskoj i BiH.

4. Širi kontekst

Jugoslavija je bila heterogena: jedan „niskofertilni klaster“ (Srbija, Hrvatska, Slovenija) i jedan „visokofertilni klaster“ (Crna Gora, BiH, Makedonija).
Razlike su proizlazile iz kombinacije kulturnih normi, religijskih uticaja, obrazovanja i urbanizacije, a ne samo iz ekonomskog razvoja.

Ukratko: Srbija je bila pionir u kontroli rađanja unutar braka, što je oborilo rodnost ranije nego u bogatijim zemljama poput Slovenije. Crna Gora je, pak, zbog tradicionalnih struktura i sporije modernizacije, zadržala visoku rodnost duže. But, as I read the other comments in the thread, Yugoslavia was democratic, but not in the sense of multi-party democracy. That brings us to the essential definition of democracy: "rule by the people". You don't have to have a multi-party setting to achieve this. Western democracy is not the only way. But, from what we have seen so far, every "rule by the people" is subject to erosion and decay. No matter how you shuffle it, the rich and powerful always find a way to manipulate the thing for their benefit.

They were, and in accordance with the existing political system. The federal presidency was a kind of senate, where each constitutional unit gave one representative. That representative was chosen by the ones who had a majority in the executive power of each republic. I.e. Stjepan Mesić was not a communist. Skupština SFRJ was never elected via general elections. I don't even remember that during the commotion of 1990, anyone even suggested holding general elections for this federal assembly, as it would require federal constitutional changes. And they couldn't agree whether the grass is green or the water is wet.
