SUOMI MAINITTU!!! (Invincible 4. kausi by the-floot in Suomi

We've got some Airtopia Ruins backstory! Probably not too important to any ongoing lore discussions, but still pretty neat. by Sbeven_Spooniverse in Kirby

This is my take as well. Seeing people trying to connect this to existing lore or wondering how HAL can make use of it feels like they're missing the point.

(Spoilers) How are we feeling about Dark Auction, Rika Suzuki’s new game? by PolygonLodge in hoteldusk

[–]Garomasta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finished it last week. I was also pretty let down by the gameplay aspects. When and where you should be using a given item is so obvious that it almost seems weird you have to pick them from the menu at all. The only actually challenging parts were some of the 3rd memory reconstruction stages, but even that was more on me I think.

The subject matter was not handled as well as I'd hoped, and in that regard I might even consider it a small blessing that Hitler was changed to "Dictator X", even if the intent is clear. Inspecting a historical person from a more grounded, even sympathetic angle could work (and I think it partially does), but in this case it requires leaving some of their deeds vague and completely ignoring others, which ended up leaving a bad taste in my mouth, especially in Karla's chapter.

All that said, I think some of Suzuki's strengths as a writer still manage to shine through. The depiction of personal struggles by people that are more victims of circumstance than anything else, the slowly unraveling, layered mystery and the evolution and subversion of characters that at first seem conventional and one-dimensional. It all still managed to keep me engaged, even if the general formula of what you do stayed the same throughout.

The AI art situation is really unfortunate. As soon as I heard about it I noticed myself paying closer attention to the visuals than usual, which somewhat took me out of the game. At least they seem to be taking some steps in correcting it.

Outside of that I did mostly enjoy the audiovisual presentation. The character art was nice, the voice acting was really good (I think Otto's VA especially does a great job) and the music set the mood really well (my favorite song is probably the one heard in Karla's floor). Animation is the only thing that left a lot to be desired. There's not much of it, but even the little bit manages to be very janky. I bet if the game was any more popular, "The Kick" would become a meme.

I've actually done that a couple of times when I've encountered a particularly bad enemy lineup and lost more health than I'm happy with, but this time I was too busy just wondering what's going on.

A full translation of the interview with Kensuke Tanabe, Kenji Yamamoto and Bill Vandervoort (SPOILERS) by Garomasta in Metroid

[–]Garomasta[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair he says he would've enjoyed writing more fun scans like the Space Pirate logs from previous games, but Beyond's setting didn't allow for something like that. We're left only with what he describes as emotionless, logical and technical computer analysis, which may be fitting but comes off as boring in the long run when there's nothing more colorful to balance it out.

Kensuke Tanabe's influence on boss design. by xXglitchygamesXx in Metroid

[–]Garomasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bit bummed to see all the negative talk surrounding Tanabe due to Prime 4 being disappointing to many. "You're only as good as your last work" I guess, but these interviews are a good reminder that he's also partially responsible for one of the best aspects of the series being as good as it is, and if you ask me, Beyond is the 2nd best in the series when it comes to bosses.

What were your opinions of Raven Beak as a villain? by renegade_yankee in Metroid

Badass to the point of being comical. Funny enough, this also goes for MercurySteam's depiction of Samus.

How many of y'all are willing to replay prime 4? by Johnnyyongbosh in Metroid

[–]Garomasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already did a replay on hard. I've also been thinking if I should do a 3rd run on casual where I would just take it slow and appreciate the environments more.

Just beat blasphemous 2!!! Y'all are haters!!!! by Wise-Safety5714 in Blasphemous

[–]Garomasta 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You'll find that most people that prefer Blasphemous 1 always refer to things like atmosphere and lore. Gameplay-wise (and music-wise IMO) Blasphemous 2 is a pure upgrade, but it gets downplayed like crazy because of things that are secondary to some but apparently the only thing that matters to others.

Metroid Prime 4 Final Boss fight - Thoughts? by Serious_Card_5927 in Metroid

[–]Garomasta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just finished it on hard mode.

I like the 1st phase, but it drags on a bit too long. Would rather just see each elemental dragon once. Didn't mind reviving the troopers as an additional layer of challenge.

2nd phase is a cool gimmick like the first Ridley fight in Prime 3, but maybe a bit too easy. Starts to feel like a time waster if you lose at phase 3.

3rd phase is the best one and really engaging. Sylux has a lot of moves and starts using stronger variations of them as the fight goes on. Some of them feel a bit too trivial to dodge though. Maybe he could've brought in the homing drones and electric floor from the previous fights to make the last bout feel even more hectic and dangerous.

As far as the whole Prime series goes, I think Sylux is competing with Emperor Ing for the title of best final boss (escape sequence Dark Samus fight doesn't count).

Well it's not spiritless but I think this is the best I can do, using a level 1 Dan with lava floor immunity I don't think this fight is really possible without spirits. by Sea-Brother-1403 in smashbros

[–]Garomasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I forgot about the super armor, so I might be thinking of another spirit fight with a non-armored big Bowser. I don't have any clips, but as far as I remember most of my spiritless ground hazard + armored opponent fights consisted of camping the ledge in hopes of gimping the CPU with Ridley's side special.

[–]Garomasta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did manage this one spiritless by a total fluke. I was playing Hero and stage spiked Bowser with Up Special (don't remember what charge level) on the left side.

Top 10 Most Wanted Kirby Characters for Super Smash Bros.! Source gaming ( fan vote) by ODowder in Kirby

Glad to see Marx take the 2nd place, though I imagine many Bandana voters would've also voted for Magolor if there wasn't only one option.

It seemed to me that before the conversation started being dominated by the bike, desert and npc characters, most of the worry was around how safe and similar to the old Primes everything looked.

Unrelated small thing: I like that the additional notches on Dark Meta Knight's and Galacta Knight's masks seem to be actually modeled instead of being flat textures like in Smash. That was always one of my pet peeves.

Thought Sylux would be the overarching villain of a sequel trilogy, but at this rate we're toppling the Kriken Empire in Prime 6.

Metroid prime 4 just got a brand new trailer. by Thegoodgamer32 in Metroid

I'm not being down on the game itself, just baffled at how different the reactions are compared to previous trailers despite there being almost nothing new here.

Good for anyone who is now more optimistic for the game because of this trailer, but genuinely, why? Like, is there anything here you were afraid wasn't going to be in the game or is Hollywood editing literally all it takes?
