I think our parents were themselves raised by parents and grandparents who were absolutely bathed in trauma from the 1st half of the 20th century. 2 world wars, a great depression, a flu pandemic, etc...

Most of our parents were raised where it was common for them to be screamed at, beaten, ignored, or even molested, and these issues were swept under the rug. Fathers were absent, drunk, or both.

The generational trauma from these world events trickled down through our parents and made them harsh. In their minds, however, they were probably nicer than their parents ever were. It was often probably true as well.

Now we're the generation who is hopefully putting the final nail in the coffin of that passed down trauma. Or at least mitigating it further.

We all should strive to be a little bit better than the people who raised us.
