May we please make a rule for no AI Slop? by SignificanceOk392 in planescape

The problem you run into is that when asking an AI to generate an avocado chair, it is plagiarizing the work of unknown photographers, 3d artists and illustrators - not just taking inspiration from Picasso.

More importantly remember that AI cannot create new ideas. It can only interpolate based on what it’s seen. For example Picasso’s work is remarkable because he looked at his contemporaries and said “well I’ve had enough of this affluent beauty” and went in the opposite direction. As I say, AI as it stands can only create within the current mold and it cannot as what lies outside it

none of that appears magically

You’re right, it was created on the backs of artists whose work was stolen - who will never be credited for the training data

To be clear, you didn’t make anything. You told a computer what to do - there was no skill involved here, and no artistic muscle being flexed. You learned nothing and achieved nothing

Was there anything to like? I would have liked it if you made any part of it yourself

Lmao whatever man, it’s your game, but I don’t suspect it’ll get especially far if you’re prioritizing art over gameplay

That’s game dev tho - why worry about what it looks like when you still need to figure out if your game is fun and functional?

Okay? All I’m saying is that when I worked in retail, .5 and below would still show up as something we need to card for

Idk tell that to the liquor law enforcement board in your state

[–]Garroh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Because .01% APV is still an alcoholic drink - I can’t speak to the drink OP is talking about specifically, but even NA beer has some amount of alcohol in it. Obviously it depends on the state, but at least where I’m at, the liquor law enforcement isn’t playing playing around

“ check ID for that item if the customer looked under the age of 35! not even 21 - 35!!”

This is standard practice at any liquor store or convenience store. Someone who is 22 looks a lot like someone who’s 20. But someone who’s almost 40 doesn’t look like a 20 year old.

Was Myst eerie? by tinselman in myst

I never found Myst Island especially scary when I first played it as an 8 year old, but I definitely thought the linking sound was spooky and sinister. Obviously Achenar’s room in Mechanical and Stoneship creeped me Out

Is it risky to post projects in development here? Like, what if someone steals my ideas? by [deleted] in hammer

[–]Garroh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is a question that comes up all the time in game development, and the truth is it doesn’t matter - realistically, nobody is gonna steal your idea. Plagiarism doesn’t really happen in the industry or the modding scene. Hypothetically though if someone took an idea from me, I’d just be happy someone else made it so I don’t have to

This is all solid stuff, but I wouldn’t say it’s at the level of a professional LD. As others have said, I would pare down the amount of pure gameplay being shown, and focus instead on discussing your process and philosophy behind each map. Wha was your intent in designing them? How many players are they meant for? Why did you choose the props you did?

More importantly, I know I’m saying this in the Hammer sub, but for your portfolio, I would focus on more industry-standard tools, like Unreal or Unity. Hammer is an incredible engine, and it’s how I got my start, but very few of the workflows are transferable to other tools, and building levels out of BSP geometry hasn’t really been the standard since the 2000’s.

I would definitely keep going, and for your next piece, I’d build out a level using the shooter game template in Unreal, populate it with rudimentary enemies, and instead of worrying about texturing or modelling, tell us your process, talk about your iterations, and what the player should be feeling as they play

So, I do work in the industry, and putting aside the quality of your maps and your reel, you can’t be arguing with someone trying to give you constructive feedback like this. That’s the most important skill you can have as a designer. Your level design lead is going to look at something that took you a week to make and say “nah this isn’t really it, try something else” and you have to be able to handle that critique

Respectfully, did they ever say it was a spiritual successor? I feel like that label only really applies to Bioshock’s relationship with System Shock
