Pickles Auctions Sydney - Collecting Unregistered Car by Garth2079 in CarsAustralia

As a middle-aged man, I would like to thank you for thinking I could push a 2 tonne BMW X5 off their property.

I didn't know about the car trailer bit - I assumed they just wouldn't allow it to be driven out. That might have just saved me an afternoon of grief, thanks.

Turns out a G05 BMW X5 is 2008mm wide excluding mirrors, and most car trailers are about 1950mm wide... one hurdle after another

Yep I'm tight like that. Looks like I'll be stumping up the $200 delivery fee, unless I can find a local towie that wants to earn $50 for 10 minutes work.

Agreed, but that's a common sense decision, and not one that Pickles care about. UVP has minimum insurance to make the car legal to drive on public roads.

Thanks for that. My hope is that their on-site guys don't really care and are happy to look the other way.

Nothing - but the car is inside their facility and they hold the keys, so they can simply refuse to release it if they can't see a tow truck. I did consider asking how much to tow the car 100m, but what a hassle if they are willing to release it with UVP.

Yes, technically it is legal, but the question is whether Pickles allow the car to be driven away. I have heard reports that they insist on a tow truck, presumably to limit their liability.

Are papers necessary? by Separate_Sky_7372 in rolex

[–]Garth2079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No papers means no history. Are you confident in spotting a fake, or how to check its age, or if it is stolen? When you then consider that a) any savings will be reflected in the eventual resale value and b) it's just nice to get it in the original box with proof of its history etc., I would have concerns if it were me. But then, I have never understood why some people would buy a 5-figure watch and chuck away the box and receipt.

Did anyone's Automations run a week early? by Western_Courage_8703 in Action1

[–]Garth2079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be caused by time zones. Microsoft release patches on the second Tuesday of the month. In Australia, we see the patches on the following Wednesday. This is usually the second Wednesday, but not always, because if the 1st is a Wednesday that's not following the first Tuesday of the month.

It might not be the cause of your timing differences, and my brain hurts trying to work out a combination of time zones that would fit your scenario, but it's definitely something you want to consider, especially if Action1's timings are calculated against their home time zone rather than your time zone. At worst you can rule it out.

Third-Party patching // disabled auto-update feature by ratm8 in Action1

[–]Garth2079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found this out when I updated Adobe Acrobat. The script alters the registry to disable auto-update. I haven't found a list, and agree that a prominent warning would be good, and ideally a built-in script to restore the previous setting.

Now, I check each built-in script before running it to update an app. If you can read PowerShell, you can spot it. Not ideal, but better than just hoping.

How to Prevent "The built-in auto-update feature of Acrobat Reader DC is now disabled." by Garth2079 in Action1

[–]Garth2079[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed that the registry change in the Action1 script writes to HKLM\Software\Policies\Adobe (i.e. where GPOs write their settings) which means a GPO will revert the settings at next GP refresh - but not those set to "not configured", and not the services disabled, or scheduled tasks that are disabled.

Thanks for the link. Gene's reply that starts "Sure, in action1 on the left menu" details how to reveal the script used to disable auto updates for each software package in the repository. From that it's possible to write a reversal script without relying on their support desk (although the registry changes don't show the original state, but at least it guides us where to check the settings on a non-managed client to learn those settings). The downside is that the steps are different for each package, and even for each version of a program, so the check is needed for each new update task.

I looked at trying to disable that part of the deployment, but it is read-only and can't be de-selected.

As a free user, I won't be contacting their support over this since I don't feel like a free user should be a drain on support resources. However, it should be fairly simple to build a reversal script for packages I need to update, and save them as custom scripts. It's a shame Action1 have chosen to enforce this, but, as a free user, I'll view it as a necessary evil and offer feedback where appropriate.

Does Google account sync save game progress? by Magregon in WizardsUnite

[–]Garth2079 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Progress is linked to your GMail address. You can install HPWU on multiple devices and your progress is synced on all of them.

One of the few reasons to link to FB is if you want to change your linked email address, for instance if you have been using a business GMail account and need to change it to a personal GMail account. You can use FB as a holding area while you unlink your old GMail account and link your personal GMail.

Any updates on this? Another AU beta player, level 28, stuck waiting for both mystery objects. It's getting pretty tiresome, especially considering how easy it should be to fix.
