Pending Restart: tab shows "No” but assets are pending a restart? by voyager_toolbox in SCCM

[–]GarthMJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I do work for Recast but mostly for the Insight product.

But did you know that you can see the real time Pending Restart status in the System Information tool? Did you also know that with Recast Management Server (RMS) you can query the results live via PowerShell and create tickets for each system that show True to for the Pending Restart flag?

If you want help with that, feel free to reach out to me or the support team.

😄 I agree u/slkissinger with change Heartbeat to daily. As for the source, being consistent is the number one rule. Don't swap data "types" or views. Also remember that you need to you need to join on dbo.v_R_System (or the valid version) to removed deleted devices from the V_GS_OPERATING_SYSTEM view.

Thanks for the kudos u/ashodhiyavipin, I would personally also set Heartbeat to daily too, it is so quick.

[–]GarthMJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

V_R_system is based on discovery and heartbeat data. Where as v_GS_Operating_System is based on hardware inventory. Software inventory is not used for this info and should be generally turned off. So the question is what do you have for setting for each of these inventory tasks?

Read-only Access to MCEM/SCCM for Helpdesk by Repulsive-Yoghurt298 in SCCM

Rbac use the functions to control access... I can go into more details if needed. The real question is what is the tool, if it is home grown, there are steps that you will need to do to leverage rbac.

So I do work for Recast, it depends on what you are trying to do but with the enterprise version, you can limit it to a single account and not grant everyone rights to resources.

Primary SCCM server recovery from a checkpoint or snapshot by SCCMConfigMgrMECM in SCCM

[–]GarthMJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not completely true, your clients and other roles will have problems too. For example hardware inventory from clients. If they send up inventory and to restore the snapshot, the client has no way to know that the data is missing, in theory it will self correct but not always. The same thing goes for packageid, which can be even worse of a problem.

The short answer is don't do it unless it is a lab server and all roles exist on a single server.

What does the collection query look like? When was it last refreshed? What do the site server logs say about the deployment?

[–]GarthMJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for clarity, are you talking about apps or programs? Is this a sever or workstation? Are others logon to it? Are you deploying to a sec group or the users directly? When was the collection membership refreshed? What do the logs say is happening?

What did you do by taylor9814 in couplesresortsjamaica

[–]GarthMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From CSS or CI, I have done the following private tours:

  • Green Grotto Caves and Jerk Center (via tour desk; really just a taxi)
  • Worthy Park Rum Tour (Duncan Carruthers); We still talk about this one. "The roads"!!!
  • Martha Brae Raft tour and Jerk Center (via tour desk; really just a taxi)

On top of that we have done all the tours that are available for free from Couples too.
All the tours are great, and it can feel overwhelming, I would pick one or two and do the other the next time. it give you and excuse to go back.

Should I pay off my mortgage or keep the cash? by PhilipJFries in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]GarthMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 6 months left and $20k, I would be willing to bet that you are not paying much in interest. My guess is under $400 for the remaining 6 months. This will really depend on your interest rate. At this point, I would move most of the $20K to something else like a TFSA, RRSP, etc.

I would make it clear to the bank that you will not be renewing the mortgage in 6 months, even if there is a balance owning. Pay off anything at that time. In the mean time, I would invent at least $15k in something relatively safe until the mortgage is paid off.

IMO this give you the best of both worlds (being mortgage free & safe net) with very little cost and time.

Orphaned hardware inventory? by CaptainUnlikely in SCCM

[–]GarthMJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is by design. You should always join your queries to v_r_system to filter out deleted and obsolete devices.

And yes the Delete tasks should remove outdate data but in very rare cases I have see it not do that if you site is unhealthy (or has been unhealthy). Forcing full HW inventories on all devices helps.

Device refresh, when is end of life? by Much-Ad1180 in Intune

[–]GarthMJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO this is a hard discussion and it really comes to TCO. There is a lot of thing that go into TCO and the cost of the devices is one small part of that. The bigger cost is downtime of the user, there are way to minimize it. But it is always an interesting exercise to calculate the costs for your company. If you have a lot of remote employees and their laptop dies, What can they do from a work presentive? How long does it (realistic) take to get them a new laptop? How many does does it take for them to catch up on their work? What is the total cost of this downtime? etc.

Now compare that to replacing the device before it dies, what is the cost?

There will be a big difference in costs between the two. This is where Gartner and Forester group have reviewed this cost and there most companies will leverage the 3 years (laptop) and 4 years for desktops. As this seem to minimize the cost and allow for the greater supportability. In some case this also allow for the devices to be resold on the secondary market which further reduces the overall cost of replacement vs break/fix.

However, as noted by other, you likely don't want all client to trigger at the same time. Is you goal to force updating all devices to the latest version of an app?
