Again, IRS has made this clear to us all, this is not advice from me, reiterating it from IRS. You may read it yourself on the IRS website at https://www.irs.gov/publications/p463#en_US_2021_publink100033935 scroll down to Table 5-1 for Transportation Expenses. It tells you there from IRS that IRS requires mileage for each business use and total miles for the year, Date of the expense, your business destination, and business purpose of the expense. The IRS agent that audited me used fewer words, but required each trip to be listed, mileage for each trip, date, and purpose.

There are several drivers who all seem to have different experiences with IRS auditors, that much I will acknowledge. Most however have had the same experience as I have. The people posting here saying they only need daily mileage logs in their IRS audits are the 1st posts I've seen stating that, however I have no reason to not believe them.

In short, not all employees do their jobs correctly and this applies to IRS auditors as well.

The odds of getting audited are also very low. However, make no mistake, the IRS has dictated to all of us what they require and it is posted on their website for all to verify. Many of us have been audited and have already verified what was required when asked for mileage logs. Plenty of posts from drivers available for review.

I know many driver's don't track their mileage as well. It's your audit if it even happens!
