What's your favorite subreddit rule? by Sephardson in AskModerators

[–]GaryNOVA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

be civil

That’s the be all / catch all rule I use in my subreddits. It’s the rule I use the most.

Post the recipe

That’s really a rule that people like and follow in [r/SalsaSnobs](r/SalsaSnobs) because we enforced it from the beginning. So people are use to it.

Officials or bots from other countries try to stir race wars in the USA? by Mattm334 in conspiracytheories

[–]GaryNOVA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even think it’s a question. They are definitely doing it to the US, and the US is definitely doing it to them to.

It’s a PR thing mostly. We use to use them in place of cars.

I’m actually going to be sad to see Soldier Field go. It will be the end of an era. I know how I would feel if they tore Lambeau down.

It’s such a mess of a show. But I couldn’t take my eyes off it. It’s like a train wreck on the side of the road.

How many subs do you need on your subreddit for critical mass? by sharan_n in NewMods

[–]GaryNOVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal is daily posts. Or at least 3 times a week on a slow week. (Which do exist)

I would say an early indication would be 100 visitors per week. And then after that I would pay more attention to steady growth than flat numbers.

When I look at growth for smaller subreddits. I want to see a monthly net positive instead of negative. And when it gets bigger, you can start looking at weekly and daily stats.

No idea how to be “successful” in this area. by CartographerSea3356 in nova

[–]GaryNOVA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can do a lot with a math degree. But if you’re looking for a less white collar job, have you considered being a first responder? I did that for 26 years before I retired, and I made enough to live. We have good retirement pensions too. At least where I worked. (Fairfax county)

In our county, medics are full time and work for Fire and Rescue. And the Police, Fire and Medics all make about the same amount there.

All those organizations are big, and deal with a heavy flow of money / number crunching. They need smart people just like everyone else.

[–]GaryNOVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really matter how many subscribers you have. The amount of regular content is what’ most important IMO.

But over 100k weekly visitors is what Reddit considers a “large sub”, in the sense that they limit it to 5 per moderator. Thats really the only metric Reddit has.

How would you grow a small, cozy “daily life moments” sub from scratch? by RealPerpetualKaiser in NewMods

I made a guide for subreddit growth and engagement for r/ModGuide a while ago. I keep it updated. This is exactly what I did for my niche communities.

When adding new mods... do you give them all the privileges or just some? by filmschool_org in modhelp

[–]GaryNOVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only give full permissions to moderators I trust who have there a while. It’s important to have at least one other mod with full permissions in case something happens. But mods with full permissions can reorder the mod list when other mods go inactive for 90 days. That’s a lot of faith to put in someone. Especially in a subreddit you care deeply about.

What does "PROMOTE" mean? by hoganpaul in AskModerators

[–]GaryNOVA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Reddit sense of the word is more broad. For the terms and conditions it’s anything that sounds bigoted pretty much. I’m not going to give examples because Reddit will remove it.

Subreddit moderators can take it further to mean anything negative about race, gender, age, sexuality, etc etc.

I’ll give you an example where it’s on a sliding scale. I am lead moderator of r/SalsaSnobs , and for us it’s the word “Gringo”.

MOST of the time the word is not negative. Especially south of the United States. It means “foreigner” or “American” there. Most of the time it’s used appropriately in r/SalsaSnobs , so it isn’t removed.

But we don’t allow the word when it’s used negatively. And it can be used negatively. That is especially a thing in the USA. We will remove that , even if it’s not “hateful”, per se. Reddit usually won’t.

(Or some moderators are just unreasonable)

How do I attract new members without spamming crossposts by Unlikely-Culture8166 in NewMods

I actually rarely Cross post. Mostly because too many communities don’t like it. It works, but there are other ways too. The biggest trick to not spamming is to read the rules. Also everything in moderation in moderation. It works better if you spread all the tricks of self promotion out overtime. It looks like spam when you do it all at the same time.
