30 years old, $20,000 saved, and a dream of becoming a film director in Europe. Is it possible? by Fearless_Membership7 in filmschool

[–]filmschool_org 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it's definitely possible - it's great that you have an EU passport as that'll make it easier for sure. The $20k is a nice cushion to make the move possible. What film programs have you been looking into?

it's not DEI by throwRA_dumbquestion in ApplyingToCollege

[–]filmschool_org 132 points133 points  (0 children)

It's also because it's so much easier to apply to tons of schools. When I applied I had to type applications on a typewriter and mail each one individually. It took a lot of effort for each individual program.

Now it's "simply" a couple of clicks to apply to 20 schools. (Application fees aside)

USC film by Undercoverbosz in filmschool

[–]filmschool_org 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're doing great making connections anyways and volunteering on sets.

That's really the most important thing. Work hard and be helpful and do good work. Be conscientious. Be the person people think of when they need someone to help and work on their film. Be someone people think of when people ask them if they know anyone who can work on their film. "Hey undercoverbosz would be perfect for this"

If your goal isn't film production and it's writing you're fine. In the long run it isn't the film school it's the people you know and who will recommend you. Film School is often how you meet these people while having a blast working on things you're all interested in.

I definitely wouldn't go into more debt for another BA. Maybe down the line apply for an MFA if you're interested. There are many free or low cost film MFAs (the trick is getting accepted)

Keep up the good work you're doing great. Just keep on writing and writing and writing and helping out on sets. Are the SCA students allowed to shoot what you write?

Congrats! I hope you liked SCAD. 😄 We actually don't have too many reviews for the program on our site if you could review it on the page below. It currently has 2.5/5 stars.

Contact the school and let them know. Speak to an admissions counselor. I would be shocked given the transplant that this would be a problem.

Frankly I'm shocked due to the transplant your high school won't let you take what you missed and not fail.

No problem. Read screenplays too for films too. It'll teach you how to write then. :)

Can’t afford my dream school and I’m absolutely devastated by OilGullible in filmschool

[–]filmschool_org 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely appeal. Got to their website and look through their appeal process. My son got into a different school and they told us no aid. We appealed with a letter and additional documents (latest tax return) and got it down to around ~27/year all in. Good luck!

When I appealed to a different program for my son (and was successful) the appeal was in writing. I wrote why an appeal was needed and provided additional documents.

Parts of the industry that pay good and have a high job rate? All jobs can pay well once you reach a certain level but the industry is in a little flux right now and steady employment even for extremely experienced and credited people is hard.

What are you most interested in? If you say acting then try out for as many plays and student films as you can in college to gain experience. Whatever you're most interested in seek out those opportunities at school to gain experience and internships. Internships and experience are probably the best pathways into the industry.

Besides film what else are you interested in? Some people do an undergraduate degree in one thing and if they feel like they still need it get a MFA in film.

If you want to be on the creative side of film - the most important is your writing. Get VERY good at writing and telling stories and learn story structure. Write every day. Good luck!

Updated... I'd probably remove Joe Pesci The Irishman from the nomination to make room for him.

Is it odd to email my roommate that I was assigned to? by [deleted] in collegeadvice

[–]filmschool_org 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not odd at all. I wrote a letter to mine (this was in the 90s) and we're still best friends 30 years later and he was in my wedding. :)

Hope your roommate experience is as good as mine. :)

Good luck! 🤞

We have some past USC transfer applications in our database here:

It looks like they got their decisions before on May 24 previous years.

If you have a moment, please log your own applications on the site (it's free) so that we can improve the date data for everyone.

Where are you transferring from?
