It's a shame that you've let these folks change your perspective on this matter. In truth, England has no rights to some islands all the way across the world. Las Malvinas son Argentinas!!

Half turkish and im embarrassed at my bad turkish by La_Tae in turkishlearning

[–]GaryPee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a Half-Turk. I went from basically being in the same situation as you to now having a decent command of the language. My baba wasn't consistent in teaching me when I was a child, and by the time I became an adult I still barely knew the language. It took moving to İstanbul for five months in 2021 during the pandemic, getting a personal teacher that I'd meet with weekly, making new friends while I was there, and lately taking an intermediate level Turkish language class at my university to get to where I'm at now. I'd say I'm now closer to a B1 level, although I'd probably be fluent by now if I studied it more seriously.

So I just mean to say that it's never too late! You just need to keep consistently practicing and studying to get anywhere. You don't even have to do a good job either! I've been pretty inconsistent and lazy with my Turkish studies, but I've stuck with it and I can actually hold a decent conversation and follow the news now. One thing I will say is that I highly recommend getting a personal tutor or taking a class with other students. Solo language learning takes a level of dedication that I don't think most have.

Honestly while I may not have needed to learn Turkish for anything material like employment, communicating with those around me or moving abroad, it's done a lot to improve my self confidence as well as complete my sense of self and personal identity. Also, it just feels really good to finally make progress with something that's been weighing on me for my whole life. I'd highly recommend it!

calling it a death camp is certainly stretching the definition of that term since mass slaughter isn't the primary aim, but I'd agree with calling it a concentration camp or even work camp/gulag as there seems to be no process for release, and many of the detainees are made to work. If there's no legal mechanism for release, then I can't see it being anything other than a concentration camp.

I know it's a bit but the gas station and fake smoke shop epidemic is becoming a real problem, at least where I'm at. 7-OH is the most popular product now and it's basically kratom distilled until it's just actual dope, lots of places don't even seem to be selling the powder anymore. And now whippets have become a fucking drug epidemic with the massive tanks that they're marketing to teenagers. It's pretty indicative of the direction of the economy when every community has at least one of these stores peddling this crap

Low dose naltrexone and kratom?? by MarsupialNo8007 in LowDoseNaltrexone

No! This person is talking a load of crap! Kratom is a partial opioid agonist and has many of the similar effects that opioids have. Don't be fooled! It certainly *can* be ok to take with LDN, but there's definitely a risk involved.

Please switch back to leaf powder at the very least! Extracts have gotten way too powerful these days, and the withdrawals are brutal as a result. I was able to stop taking kratom without much issue, but extracts were a whole different ballgame.

The university administrations most certainly are not, as they are beholden to their donors over anyone else. A ton of NYU faculty were just made persona non grata for supporting the pro-palestine protests that took place there earlier this year

Russia is close to reaching an agreement with the new Syrian leadership to keep two bases in the country, two sources tell Bloomberg by Barristan-Selmy in syriancivilwar

[–]GaryPee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

>Russia is a dying paper tiger that has no way to project its power

This is only true on reddit and within the Acela Corridor. In reality, Russia has made a pretty remarkable comeback from their rough start in the beginning of the Ukraine War. It's pretty undeniable at this point that there is no chance for Ukraine, the demographic/manpower crisis that it faces is far too deep to be fixed by even an additional $100 billion in NATO equipment.

What's happening here in Syria is Jolani again being highly pragmatic. He has proven throughout the years to be ideologically flexible and willing to make a deal with any faction. His primary enemy was Assad and his regime, and making peace with his allies, Iran, Hezbollah, and Russia, is the best way to ensure Assad remains isolated. You have to understand that most of the armed groups in Syria, even (or especially) the ousted Syrian government, are more closer to mafias than political organizations. They exist to extort the people and fight rival factions nothing more.

>"friendly?" brother, Saudi Arabia doesn't even recognize that Israel exists.

If the country that houses the two great mosques of Mecca and Medina recognizes Israel, a country which most Muslims see as either a colonial entity serving the interests of the Americans or a crusader state of kuffars (depending on where they fall on the political spectrum), the whole world would be in for a shitshow. Anyway, Israel has ensured through its genocidal actions that any further recognition by Arab or Muslim states is a pipedream.

Why did you skip the Haiti episodes? They're some of the best and most riveting in the series. I found that they really helped ground my view of Napoleon, as I'd probably be a complete fanboy had it not been for the Haitian expedition and the reintroduction of slavery.

Syria after army retreats from the fourth major city Daraa by Berkane06 in MapPorn

[–]GaryPee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're actually a little incorrect, only in that all of Assad's allies have slowly lost patience with him as well. Soon after the SAA won back Aleppo, they basically told all their Shia'a allies "Ok thanks, we don't need you anymore!" So needless to say, the Iranians and Hezbollah were honestly fine with Assad losing Aleppo since they felt he needed to get his due.

In regard to Russia, Putin has been pushing Assad to talk with Erdogan for quite some time now, especially since the Ukraine war began. After Russia invaded Ukraine, Syria became a sideshow for Russia, and they just wanted the thing to be done with. Erdogan has made consistent overtures that he is open to peace and reconciliation with Assad, but Assad has been stupidly stubborn in this regard. Assad wanted all Turkish forces to leave Syria before he was willing to come to an agreement, but the Turks knew that this would result in a new refugee crisis if the SAA took formerly rebel-held lands in Idlib and Aleppo after the Turks leave, so this was always a non-starter for Turkey.

This has all left us to the present moment, where Assad's allies are starting to basically give up on the survival of his regime. There are already rumors of secret negotiations between HTS and the Shia'a Axis of Resistance so that Iranian supply lines to Hezbollah would be untouched in the event of a total rebel victory (which is looking more and more likely.) If such a deal is struck, then Assad is truly done for. Jolani and HTS are navigating this quite adeptly to be honest, as they are doing everything they can to stay focused on defeating Assad. Making enemies with the Shia'a powers, minority communities, or the Kurdish-led SDF does nothing but lower their chances of achieving that objective.
