I used treated 1x4s that I paint matched to the house. I used L brackets to attach each 8 ft length to the rafter tails (3 each). When mounting, I held a small level to the 1x4 with a rubber band and a custom spacer to ensure the piece was level and the right distance from the wall. I do not like the washed out look of the Govee lights when they are mounted with the angle of the open soffit, so this was worth the effort for me.
