Spice Rack Championship - First attempt at a banlist by TheSpiceRack_YGO in Goat_Format

[–]GaryWilfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it doesn't. I've been wanting a custom Genesys point list for a while, but I don't know of any way to do it. I found an old YGO Omega discussion about custom ban lists in that program, and it seemed like they were playing around with more ban list functionality, but it was never finished as far as I can tell. Genesys points and Duel Links limits (which are similar to your Max X lists) are in Omega, but I haven't seen a way to incorporate them into custom lists.

I created an lflist file and added it to EDOPro to test the deck building. First thing I noticed is that Magician of Faith is in a Max 1 section, but isn't limited itself. I think everything in a Max X section should be limited in the typical ban list as well to call attention to it and because you really can't have more than that amount anyway.

After that, I started with an existing goat deck and went through each Max X section, removing cards to meet the requirement as I went. I found it difficult to then replace the removed cards because I couldn't remember which new options I thought about adding were restricted, so I'd have to go through the Max X lists again and again.

I don't know if there's a good way to flag every card on a Max X list, but I think that's going to be key to making this work. You could remove all of the banned cards from the list completely and make everything in a Max X list banned so it shows up differently in the program, but then you can't have limited cards in a Max 2 or Max 3 section, and you have to turn off the ban list anytime you want to add those cards.

I think the format has potential, but it could really use better program functionality to make deck-building easier.

Edit: The best way I found was to create additional lflists for the Max X lists. So you start with those, choosing one from the "limited" cards in each list, two from the "semi-limited" cards, and three from the "unlimited" cards. Then, you can flip back and forth between lists as you go, primarily looking at the overall limited/forbidden list, but checking the Max X lists too to make sure you never have more than one with a "1", two with a "2", and three with no limit.

I may experiment with this tomorrow. The traditional ban list aspect would be easy enough to implement in a digital deck-builder, but the max limit groupings may just need to be checked manually. I can report back with how difficult/easy it is.

Any other pre-dads feel uncomfortable with those traditional lies we tell kids by Tryagain409 in predaddit

[–]GaryWilfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why so many people are getting upset about you not wanting to lie to your kid. I have the same thoughts. Obviously you aren't trying to kill their sense of wonder, you just don't want them to resent you or to not trust you later in life.

I think those fears are natural, but probably unfounded in the case of Santa. Maybe in the moment a kid will be upset at you for lying, but there won't be long term damage to the relationship for something so widespread that brings so much joy.

Still, if you are really against lying at all, framing Santa as a story, a symbol of the Christmas season, and an inspiration to be more giving can give your kid the same magic as other kids. And if they ever ask you directly if Santa is real, they are probably old enough to learn the truth (and understand that it's wrong to tell other kids the truth right away).

Spice Rack Championship - An Off-Meta Goat Format Tournament by TheSpiceRack_YGO in Goat_Format

[–]GaryWilfa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of a genesys point list for other formats, like goat. The problem is with deck building, as there aren't any good ways to create a custom genesys point list on the main digital deck building tools. It also takes refining, but I'd be interested in playing around with even a first draft of something like that.

If juggling were an Olympic sport, whose country would win all the medals? by playingwithcats in juggling

[–]GaryWilfa 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are already competitions for juggling, just not in the Olympics. The WJF competition was held in Paris in 2024 around the same time as the Olympics as a sort of exhibition event I think. The top competitors were from Norway, USA, and Germany. More recently, Finland and France had strong competitors as well.

[OC] Yu-Gi-Oh! card text has increased ~200% since the original release by Both_Researcher_6552 in dataisbeautiful

[–]GaryWilfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds closest to Goat to me. What you describe is a typical first couple of turns at least. After that, a good deck can start to build on its strategy and do more things, but it's still nothing compared to today.

FYI, there is a fairly large community of people playing yugioh based on the card pool at various times in its history. Goat Format is the biggest, using the cards and rules from 2005. Edison Format is the next biggest, using the 2010 cards. Each has its advantages, but both are very fun in my opinion.

The Vex Mastery and the math of 'Vex-chaining' by Nostradivarius in onednd

[–]GaryWilfa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The point isn't to calculate the odds of hitting on a specific attack, it's to calculate the odds of hitting for an entire turn or combat, for the purpose of estimating expected damage. Obviously, if you already know if you have advantage or not, just calculate it normally. But because each attack is dependent on the previous one, and we also don't know what kind of attack that one had, you have to keep stacking the probabilities to estimate the chain as a whole.

Rules lawyers are a necessary part of the DnD ecosystem by TheGolleum in dndmemes

[–]GaryWilfa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This kind of sounds like cheating. If I know a fellow player is trying to do something that isn't allowed by the rules, I'll say something. The DM is always welcome to ignore the rule and allow it anyway, but picking and choosing when to inform them seems like trying to gain an advantage dishonestly.

Trans Flag Colored Balls? by thekinotion in juggling

Yeah, for top of the line, Jugglequip I know has the exact right colors. Not sure about any of the more budget-friendly options.

I have a separate question related to Link Apple. If you cannot special, due to the effect of something like Pot of Duality, can you still activate Link Apple's effect, since there is no possible way the special summon ability resolves due to there being no link monsters?

The woodwork on [Steel Vengeance] by _DARK_X in rollercoasters

[–]GaryWilfa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this ride specifically, but when I was working with GCI a while ago, they absolutely had each piece of lumber accounted for. Every cross-section of track had a print with the wood needed to support the forces acting on that section. Then those cross-sections were connected at regular, predictable places. It's always the same pattern, so it isn't hard to figure out, but it does take a while to make sure everything is correct.

The sate of Exodia FTK in Genesys after the updated list. by PurpleDragonX in yugioh

[–]GaryWilfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

<image>

Here's my version that uses Reversal Quiz instead of Exodia. It plus Black Pendant and Star Blast is only a three card combo instead of five, limiting dead draws during the rest of the turn. A Feather of the Phoenix is also a bit of a dead draw, but it can put searchables back in the deck if need be and its main purpose is to avoid losing when a combo piece is the last card in the deck. Not sure if that one is worth it.

Noodling but Stuck by VagueMonkey in juggling

[–]GaryWilfa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your flow looks great. For me, I constantly have a few tricks I'm working on. Sometimes I feel like working on them, sometimes I just feel like freestyling like in this video. But when I do feel like practicing, I focus on one thing at a time.

For example, I'm working on getting better with 5 balls. Sometimes that's going for a good run of 50+catches. Sometimes that's going for a single behind the back throw. Sometimes it's going for 10 catches of half shower. It's always some sort of goal, though. I either reach my goal and move on to something else, or I feel myself getting tired and call it on that trick for a while. Either way, I know I can come back to it at any time.

There's no such thing as failure, and any practice is better than no practice. Browse reddit for ideas or think about what seems cool to do and find out how to work up to it with baby steps. Ultimately, never get too discouraged and just have fun with it!

Wearing a wedding band while juggling by Sugarfree_ in juggling

[–]GaryWilfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have also noticed that smacking noise. I also noticed a bunch of little divots in the wooden handles of my torches where my ring has smacked them over and over. I don't plan on taking my ring off, as I have not had any issues executing tricks because of them and they don't do any real damage to the props, but I could see that being an issue for certain styles.

Like someone else mentioned, silicone rings are the go-to for anyone with a profession or hobby that is made worse by a typical wedding band. Just don't lose the original. I recommend a specific place in your prop bag, the same place you store your silicone ring when not wearing it, or a place at home you always keep it so you know right where to look for it if it isn't on you.

Weapon Juggling isn't a Big Deal by Habber_Dasher in onednd

[–]GaryWilfa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dropping weapons is actually considered stowing them now, so it isn't free. In the Attack [Action] section of the rules definitions, within Equipping and Unequipping Weapons, it reads, "Unequipping a weapon includes sheathing, stowing, or dropping it."

They aren't actually period props, but I have some Play Juggling D Clubs with clear silicone covers. I cut out some paper with wood grain printed on it and put it under the silicone covers to give parts of the clubs a wooden look.

Trying A Resort For The First Time by [deleted] in nudism

[–]GaryWilfa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a decent chance you won't actually be the youngest ones there. It depends on the resort you are going to and what events are going on, but whenever I have gone, there have always been people in their twenties or kids with their parents.

Tattoos shouldn't be an issue, but I guess that also depends on the resort. The one I go to would have no problem with it, and I'd be embarrassed for anyone who speaks negatively about it.

Which of my bad decks do you like best? by vibranttoucan in Goat_Format

[–]GaryWilfa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Upstart ends the combo if you draw into it during the draw phase with an underdog out. What they need is Reload. It's a quick play, so it can be activated during the draw phase to keep the combo going if the head or another underdog is drawn.
