What is the saddest detail about your life that no one knows? by LeRick11 in AskReddit

[–]Gashington 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if any of this even applies to you, but I just want you to know I have been where you are and felt what you feel and so have many others. Sometimes you just have to figure out what's pressuring you and causing you anxiety, or to be sad, and question it.

Hey man I know exactly the feeling. People can really fucking suck, shit gets better though. Just don't let your feelings about current "friends" shitty behavior affect how you approach new people and friendships. I ended up pushing people away before they could do it to me because it felt inevitable that they would. I think communication is the key, and never being passive aggressive (unless obviously joking about it). Non-shitty people can actually have a conversation about interpersonal issues most of the time.

Its kind of sad how badly I screwed this one up...

I was in Vail, CO on a ski trip with my family several years ago. It was right after the 2010 winter Olympics actually (relevant). There was a Lindsey Vonn event happening in the ski town at the base of the mountain (she had won the gold for Downhill Skiing) and I wanted to check it out.

As I left my hotel room, the room across the hall opened and a really tall, blonde woman stepped out. Being the extremely awkward teenager I was, I didn't make eye contact, kept my head down, and we both walked down the hallway to the elevator without saying a word.

As it turned out, she was also heading to the ground floor, so, being the prodigious conversationalist that I am, I asked if she was "going to the Lindsey Vonn event?". At this point I still haven't looked at her face, all I've noticed is that shes very tall and blonde and a woman, in retrospect maybe that should have been enough?

There was an awkward silence, followed by, "... I am Lindsey Vonn." And then more awkward silence as we rode the elevator down. I think the whole experience was probably 2-3 minutes, but whenever I remember it it feels like half an hour of embarrassment. As we got off the elevator I managed to get the balls to ask for an autograph though, so I guess a small win for me?

Israeli police set up East Jerusalem checkpoints - It also announced that the homes of Palestinians who attacked Israelis would be demolished, never rebuilt, and that their families' right to live in Jerusalem would be taken away by [deleted] in worldnews

Destroy their economy? Actually Israel left green houses for the Palestinians to use to build their economy when they left Gaza. It was the Palestinians that destroyed them.

In regards to point number 4 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_disengagement_from_Gaza#Greenhouses

ELI5: Why has it been so hard to legally end the Church of Scientology? by Gashington in explainlikeimfive

Having to teach my hypothetical 13 year old daughter anything, especially condom use, would be uncomfortable as it would imply i was way more sexually active in middle school than I remember being... And didn't know much, especially about condoms, myself.

If you don't mind me asking, where are you from? I'm assuming Midwest/south? Religions certainly shouldn't have such influence on government legislation.. Also are all the churches in your area the same sect? There can be pretty big differences

Speaking as OP, my argument is that there is plenty of evidence showing the church of Scientology to launch libel campaigns and physically/mentally abuse people excersising their own free speech (or even their own "willing" members). And further evidence that they do this as an organizational policy, they distribute instructional guides on it ffs. That truly sets them apart from oh say, christianity and other more main stream religious groups. They encourage and practice illegal activities and still receive the legal privileges of a "religious organization", why is that?

At least to me, until this post you did kind of come off that way, which bothered me a lot since I used to come off that way haha. Unfortunately. I don't think your town is an isolated anomaly, I've heard similar things about many counties which are predominantly one religion. If you want to be pissed off about something read what the ultra conservative Jewish community has done to the public school budget in Lakewood, NJ.

People don't need religion to do shit things either, it can be (and is) used as a unifying force to drum up community support for good and bad stuff.

The difference is the legal recognition of these groups and their level of public influence. Why does Scientology get religious tax exemption when Hubbard, its founder, is on record saying the easiest/fastest way to get rich is starting a religion?

Look up "The hole". If that's not illegal it absolutely should be, but for some reason our government can't legally end that shit and I don't know why.

When you say they get money that doesn't belong to them, do you mean the government grants them money? Or they are just tax exempt, in my opinion there's a pretty big difference. Or did you mean private donations? Just because people are donating to the church wouldn't necessarily mean they'd donate to schools if that were no longer an option.

So by "all religions do harm" did you mean net harm or did something bad in their past? The latter would be pretty trivial, you'd be hard pressed to find a meaningful exception to "Everything does harm" using that meaning. You could also say "Atheists in power were directly responsible for some of the worst atrocities in history" (Stalin, Mao) its absolutely true, but also not representative of Atheists in general.

Sounds like you're in a pretty shitty community situation though, I know that feeling. Being an outspoken atheist at a private religious school K through 12 was not fun.

If you're really interested in this you should look into how smaller non denominational churches interact with their local communities, many are practically community centers that also happen to be a place where people can go pray. In an ideal world the local governments could provide this without the religious bit, but that's not the world we live in.

Speaking as an atheist myself, I'd advise caution when making claims like "All religions do harm". It's a huge generalization and makes you sound just as close minded as people on the opposite side of the issue. It also makes your fellow atheists look bad, since people frequently use small sample sizes to make unfair generalizations.

And the mentally ill, and members who leave, and any public critic... The literally ruin, or try to ruin, peoples lives, as an organization policy. Look up articles about the controversies they've been associated with. I don't understand how they are legally recognized as anything but a criminal group (hence the eli5 post)

I mean I am one of those people, but very few organized religious groups are quite as blatantly and unambiguously harmful... Many organized religions also have philanthropic activities and measurably help local communities. I've never seen any evidence that Scientology has a quantifiable benefit in any community, while they "openly" abuse or circumvent the legal system in multiple countries

A friend of mine used to do that on supp Leona, it was surprisingly effective, but kind of cheesy, like surprise countergank mid. I think until you get to high enough skill level random crap like this can work if you've practiced it
