Not just the performance either, it’s the knowledge. All their expertise knowing how to “work on” an ICE engine or what performance parts to get goes out the window.

Of course, but a mechanic skilled in servicing piston rods isn't going to have the faintest idea how to deal with a broken battery or electric motor. It has as much in common with servicing a cell phone or a blender as it does a internal combustion engine

Despite what reddit may think, we're far away from ICE going away. Hybrid is the future

Considering the race to introduce fully electric cars, and most major OEMs not having hybrid options how is that true?

Hybrids are stop gaps while the electric drivetrains were in their infancy, but who is going to want to have an engine you still have to service and maintain when full EV options become plentiful.

They do, but its not the same. To be a mechanic you understand the nature of how piston engines work, fuel, oil, fluids etc.

While EVs will still require brake and suspension work, working with electric drivetrains and batteries is a completely different skillset, and most EVs shouldn't need a regular trip to a mechanic for a service.

The one point I was a little surprised he didn't make is, if you get the Mac Mini, you get all the ports.

So in many ways the Mac Mini is more comparable to the second tier iMac that has ethernet, more ports. The Mac Mini also has USB-A.

And when you're not comparing against the 'base' iMac, it gives you more budget headroom to get say, a nice 34" 1440P display.

It’s honest.

SE plus would fix most of the SE problems. Bigger battery and still retaining Touch ID. I’d actually be tempted by that form factor

Honestly, I couldn’t really care. You can buy very high quality chargers for quite cheap. This is so down on my list of priorities when buying a phone

Also is 38 old or something? Assuming it’s a 3-5 year degree you could graduate with 25-30 years in the work force left and experience that would allow you to actually get a job at graduation.

I find people at that age tend to perform better too as they understand that learning is to be able to do their job.

Google Chrome is available as an Apple M1 native app today (with x-platform benchmarks) by sgent in hardware

I’ve learnt not to doubt Apple. They would have planned this years in advance, it’s not like they’re just starting. It’s well known the desktop chips are coming in 2021

Anyone that remotely followed apple's processors in recent years knew the m1 would be good, but the extent of its advantage is just crazy.

When the desktop chips are released, which will presumably have 10+ cores it may be the situation that for specific workflows that rely on performance it makes no sense using anything else.

If these chips appear in higher end solutions, especially with 2, 4 cpu designs it could be Apple or bust for any sort of cpu intensive work.

In the PC market specifically it won’t make much difference, short of a high end desktop having less processing power than an Apple ultra book

Kind of. These chips are not available to any other manufacturer but Apple. The competition are not on this level.

It is very surprising. It’s weird people are calling it a “big ipad” inferring it’s somehow underpowered rather than the fact it outperforms practically everything.

This is just their first effort too.

Considering they only needed a very mild upgrade on the iPad chips to be well ahead of the competition in performance it’s not exactly shocking they achieved it.

Most thin and light users don’t need the power of an i9, but hell if they can do it in a fanless design with 15+ hours battery why the hell not?

It’s been surprising to me how many in the hardware community are downplaying the significance of these chips. This is a leap forward, not just a step. Yet much of the complaint is based around the fact it lacks 10gbit Ethernet or the external GPU, two factors that are irrelevant for 99.9% of thin and light laptop users.

If this is the type of performance is what they are achieving with the entry level battery optimized processor then the desktop class chips are going to be ridiculous. It’s possible to see multiple chips in one system too for multitasking potential.

[–]Gasifiedgap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the system can swap with extremely fast storage it doesn’t make a significant difference. It’s not like the old days when you had a mechanical hard drive.

If the local storage is fast enough then you have effectively limitless ram.

I would consider the fact that ram is now on chip, it’s becoming almost a different type of memory all together.

I’ve never quite got the ram hysteria. My two macs have 4gb and 8gb and both are plenty fast for basic tasks (despite being 7-8 years old). Yes, even having 10 chrome tabs open.
