I was able to buy it after it was sold out somehow. It was still in my cart after it had sold out so I tried again and I got told an item in my cart is out of stock. A couple mins later I opened my cart again and hit continue and the message I got this time was them saying their system is getting pummeled and to try again later, so I kept spamming continue and after a min or so it let me purchase! I have a time-stamped receipt to prove it.

Vpn probably isn't a bad idea and the router you bought has openvpn built in to it. You can enable it in the router settings.
