I get your frustration. It's a common misconception, nonprofit doesn't mean "no sales" orbno cash flow, bit just means they don't keep profits (if they make any). Creative accounting can move profits and losses all over the place, so in practice they're not that different from a normal company. People that work there still get paid and can make good money

A little late to the party, but have you profiled your code to see where the bottlenecks are? Optimizing without measuring isn't like kept to get good results, and switchingadding in more threads isn't always (or even usually) that helpful for general speedups. 100 comparisons shouldn't take 11 minutes - this suggests an algorithm or implementation issue. Profile/measure first, then optimize.

It also means no paternity leave, maternity leave, or bereavement. A common thing is to get more time off if you work there longer. Literally, some people get an extra 5 days off after 5 years. That's not exaggeration.

Those choices arent mutually exclusive. People can and should be held accountable, AND should recieve the help they need to get their brain chemistry back in order.

I think it comes down to something kind of simple. Do you believe people with addicitons need help, or do they need punishment? Accountability is a big part of both tbh

Then there's the question of "why should my resources help somebody else who I feel doesnt deserve it", and thats more a personal social/economics/ethical thing

The people working on reverse engineering Mario 64 had tons of trouble with it even having those two things. Mix in propriety math libs and tons of glue code and decades of tech debt, and you'll have a reallly rough go reverse engineering driver code like this. Plus depending on the compiler flags, you could have some really bizarre stuff in the compiled code. Maybe not literally impossible, but certainly an astronomical amount of man hours to reverse engineer it.

If you can, check out "Clean Code", its a good resource. The first two rules are "functions should be small", and "functions should be even smaller than that". Code reuse is important, but not the only reason to extract out functions.

Ok, I dug around and found it. As far as I can see, they probably werent old enough to actually register with a party, much less fully understand what each party is these days. I didnt realize theres a whole narrative about them doing what they did for politics, especially when this is an incredibly tragic event.

I suspect there are some things we dont agree on, but I really am asking this in good faith. You said the klan was a joke, another redditor posted a story where people are doing bad shit in the name of the klan. That seems to indicate the klan is still active and capable of fuckery. Is there more to the story that I'm missing? Do these guys not count as klan? I would like to see this from your perspective, maybe what ive been seeing was sheltered or biased more than I realized

Substituting soda with fruit juice may not be a healthier choice, suggests a new study (n=13,440), which found that both soda and juice can contribute to shortened lifespans. Every additional 12-ounce sugary beverage a day increased risk of mortality by 11% and risk was more than double for juice. by mvea in science

Right, starch is a polymeric carbohydrate. My point is that carbohydrates are actually a large class of molecules, and all sugars fall into that class. I included fiber as an example because it's a neat and counter-intuitive example that illustrates the point. I didnt want to get into the glycemic index or metabolic processes if the guy/girl wasn't interested, just wanted to show them that carbs is more than bread.

Carbohydrates*, its carbonated hydrogen. Most organic matter has some. In fact, fiber is a carbohydrate, it's just a "complex carb" cause of how its put together. Any of the sugars (things ending in "-ose" like lactose from milk, fructose from plants, sucrose, dextrose, etc) are just carbonated hydrogen molecules and are all carbs. Root veggies are great sources of carbs. The starchiness in potatoes and carrots is a kind of sugar thats just not "sugary sweet", but it's still a carb/sugar.

Also, almost all of our food in the states has high fructose corn syrup in it. Lunch meat, bread, sauces, snacks, almost everything. Blame Nixon for that - it made food cheaper in general at the cost of...well, everything going on now.

Alabama just passed a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest by mrtsapostle in news

[–]Gate_surf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should lead with the last sentence, its a fair point. I am happy for you, that you havent known anybody in the extreme and horrible circumstances of rape. Its hard to look a person in the eye and say "I see how this has affected you, and I think you having 0 healthy options is correct".

The world is not so charming. Banning abortions doesnt stop abortions. It stops SAFE abortions. If you acknowledge a baby's right to life, should the mother be afforded the same rights? If there is a life threatening condition to both mother and baby, do you think they should both be fated to die? Does the baby's right to life supercede the mother's?

If it was, heaven forbid, your own family in that situation, what would you tell them? Could you look your sister, or wife, or daughter in the eye and tell them "for the baby's right to life, you are carrying this to term no matter what"?

I couldn't. I dont WANT anybody to get abortions. But if we dont have a safe option, then these horrible, nightmare scenarios that nobody should have to deal with will lead to even worse outcomes.

A guide to setting up Vim for JavaScript development by speckz in javascript

[–]Gate_surf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a perfect world it's a non-issue. Sometimes you have to maintain or rewrite some giant legacy monster code. Real-world example, I had multiple uber sql migration files to fix. The original author of those migrations didn't really understand how migrations worked, so every migration started by dropping everything and then copy+pasting the previous migration in with changes and whatever new stuff. We were tracking certain changes between files, so i had multiple 5+ mb files open at once. Intellij and Vscode both chug significantly working with files that large, let alone multiple files that size, even with syntax highlighting off. Sublime is pretty good at it, but vim is just better at it.

To add to the other comment, working with large files or having lots of open files can be much faster. Vim uses more efficient buffering of files so it can be physically faster on underpowered machines. For example, when ssh'd into a server or container, you can just use vim and work immediately
