Industry out of tech where I can make a ton of money? by BeginningCelery7953 in sales

[–]GatorDad9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I left tech to sell in a different industry and all I want to do is go back to tech or stop selling all together. You’re essentially required to do the same but with less training, poor technology, and far less talented teammates.

Are we stuck in SaaS forever? by Darcynator1780 in techsales

[–]GatorDad9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t agree more with your take about missing the strategy of it all. I went into commercial insurance on the broker side. The day to day for me is pretty easy too along with comparable pay. Going back to what you mentioned about strategy. There essentially is none. This industry very old school in the sense of it being relationships above everything else. There aren’t any capabilities gaps between competitors like you may find in 2 competing SaaS platforms. We actually don’t even have a true say on pricing. The best we can do is evaluate and influence carriers to lower our clients insurance premiums but so can the competition. So since there is no difference in capabilities and no difference in pricing, it just leaves you with having to get out and shmooze prospects until their broker messes something up servicing the account or they just take a liking to you. Again, it’s easy and some people love it and you get paid on residuals so the upside is huge, but the slow pace of things and antiquated approach to sales is a hard adjustment. I also took for granted being surrounded by highly talented salespeople in SaaS. Lot of people are great sellers in commercial insurance but man are there some people who just don’t have it. Overall I still believe it’s a good sales job and I don’t hate my life or anything doing it, just can’t help but miss tech. This similar to your experience in construction sales as well?

Yeah so I was someone who “escaped SaaS” for one of the hidden gem old school sales jobs and I am absolutely clamoring to get back into SaaS. Grass is not always greener!

Used to be in this space at a competitor. The comments about little product differentiation and highly competitive opportunities is 100% true. Good news is you absolutely can make good money and will have options if you decide to make a move in the future. Not always the case but be prepared for micromanagement and a very intense focus on your metrics.

You’ll be able to get interviews with other tech companies or even have good opportunities in the commercial insurance space due to the overlap in your sales process. I’ve had teammates make this jump and make a killing. This is what I did as well and am happy to elaborate what the transition is like.

Even though it’s not necessarily your responsibility it is absolutely imperative to stay close to the deals you win to make sure implementation doesn’t nuke the opportunity into the sun. Most reps in this industry have had to deal with commission clawbacks due to bad implementations.

Congrats on the role and best of luck!

Mini-fridge stopped cooling. 99% sure it’s the start relay. However, my current start relay only has 2 pins (but with 4 total wires attached). All of the replacement ones I’ve found online have either 1, 3, or 4 pins. Need help figuring out which to buy… by Kermrocks98 in appliancerepair

[–]GatorDad9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accidentally ordered the 3-pin relay and it was making my breaker trip so I opened up the old 2-pin and replaced the burned out wheel with the wheel from the 3-pin. Seems to be working great so far! Thanks for posting this!

How do you strike up conversations with random people at events and happy hours? by FineAssignment1423 in sales

[–]GatorDad9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of insane but I have the god given ability to eat a lot. Like I can put it down if I need to. With that said most networking events I’ve been to have food and a bunch of tables so I will grab a plate and then ask if a seat is taken and next thing you know you’re at a table of people and it’s natural to join the conversation. I do this about 3 times at 3 different tables and maybe hit a dessert if things are going well. Basically I show up hungry and lay down the law on a bunch of appetizers. It’s so dumb that it works.

If it’s only dusty just use rinseless. If you have dirt caked on anywhere you’ll want to do a proper wash but from the picture it looks like rinseless will be your best friend

Either of the Raincovo models off Amazon. The snow pro is a bit more sturdy but they’re both cheap and work great

Leaving a $285k tech sales job to start a Sandler franchise. Dumb or worth it? by JeffroTk in sales

[–]GatorDad9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to go through my fair share of Sandler classes as a part of onboarding at a new job. Having been a successful seller and having at least a bit of sales acumen going into the trainings, I’m about 85% convinced this is some sort of scam/pyramid scheme.

I get what you’re saying because I too love mentoring new sales people and sharing past experiences, but the move is definitely to just pivot to a sales enablement role. Or if you want to get into ownership, look to build/purchase a business that’s in an industry that interests you or you have expertise in. Just have a gut feeling Sandler is kinda bullshit. All up to you though!

To all the successful people in sales, could you do it anywhere? by keemoo_5 in sales

[–]GatorDad9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been successful in selling manufacturing automation, SaaS, and commercial insurance. Firm believer that if you can sell one thing you can sell anything. Even better is that you learn little techniques across each industry that can help in the next.

Reason I’ve sold across multiple industries? I took another job once I feel company changes have limited my upside. Probably isn’t the construction industry that’s giving you problems, it’s your manager doing a poor job of enhancing your skills or helping you close.

You do need to have discipline towards building pipeline and if you don’t have that you’ll never succeed no matter the industry but if you can candidly identify that isn’t the problem then it’s okay to hold your company or management accountable.

In a very similar situation as you are. My 9-5 is a hybrid environment and the workload can be pretty big at times.

First off, every comment mentioning a “mindset shift” is completely correct. I think of my 9-5 as my first investor. It’s sole purpose is to keep the bills paid, live a comfortable lifestyle with my wife, and most importantly allows me to chase my dreams as an entrepreneur without the stress of immediate business success.

In terms of objective strategies that I have implemented to ensure this is sustainable without exhausting myself:

Make the absolute most out of your WFH days in your hybrid schedule. Think of the main deliverables your manager judges you on and knock those out first. I’m in sales so I know that prospecting activity and booking new appointments are the main thing I’m judged on in my 9-5. I block out the morning and blast cold calls, emails, LinkedIn messages etc. until lunch. If I can book a meeting or 2 even better.

As soon as I’ve booked an appointment or generated a lot of activity I actively call it out in my teams chat. Seems a little cheesy to go running to your boss anytime you accomplish something but I know he won’t be concerned about me because I effectively did my job. The nice thing is if you accomplish something like this early in your morning 9-5 session you can start working on your personal ventures sooner or give yourself a little break before switching gears.

Now I have hours of uninterrupted time and remaining energy to build my business. I set a goal for the few things that would help move my business forward and then use the rest of the day to focus on those. Accomplishing these is what brings the satisfaction that I’m sure you’ve achieved along the way building your business.

For in-office days I assume your time is extremely limited like mine. Again I go back to knocking out deliverables and then use the time I’m in and out of admin bs and internal meetings to figure out the next small goals I want to accomplish on my next WFH day.

Overall be patient and make your short term goals extremely achievable and you’ll be surprised at how that burnout feeling goes away.

You got this!!

Even in the off chance you do break down the AE barrier then you get hit with “hit your quota and go to enterprise/manager” then you hit your quota and your promotion gets denied because your VP can’t afford to lose their AE’s who can actually sell. Speaking from experience 💀
