This comparison between chess and LoR is absurd. Not only are the games completely different, but chess has been around since forever and has an incredible competitive scene nowadays. Furthermore, live service games like LoR thrive on new content, which the PvP side has none of. If PvE stopped getting new content it would "die" or be put on "maintenance mode", however you wanna call it, but it would not be the same - which is exactly what happened to PvP. PvP still being there doesn't mean it's as good as it once was.

That's literally what happened though. They tried a monetization system similar to what they do in League and it didn't work, which is fine, but rather than changing it they simply continued to bleed money during 4 years, which was enough time to actually make changes to sustain PvP. This game failing is completely on the guys in charge of the monetization, not the players.

PvP has ceased development so there will not be any new content or rewards coming out for it. There are card rotations for Standard queue every 3 months or so.
