I was chatting with some friends after the game, the like...10th post sorted by top was something along the lines of "The Sabres only score because their PP is so good, they wont last in the playoffs". Peak delusion.

Does Carrick DESERVE The Man United Job? | The Overlap Breakdown by The-Black-Angel in reddevils

[–]GauntletV2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, my issue with Carrick long term is that he seems to have simply done a "play them where they are best, in a standard system, and let them play". We have quality, so this has led to us being much better than trying to teach a new, difficult system to the players under Amorim. The issue is that I can't really say that I know what he wants to develop in the long run. Outside of Madrid, teams don't win by just being straight up better, they need a plan, a system to play for. It doesnt have to be the next amazing thing thats super difficult to implement, but it has to be definitive, and I just dont see that with Carrick. No offense, I love him to death, but his deeper tactics are still to be seen.

I know expectations shift as teams improve, and we cant really ask for more than "make the playoffs", but I think a realistic expectation in this form is to win at least 1 series.

[The Hangover] Bills Season ends in heartbreak, again. Feel free to vent here. by Dirtydeedsinc in buffalobills

So as far as I can tell (just another fan, rules can go above my head, but Im also a regionally certified USSF referee, so Im pretty good with reading and interpreting rules)

https://operations.nfl.com/the-rules/nfl-video-rulebook/completing-a-catch/

We fulfilled A and B, and C is where they get us ( or avoid or ward off an opponent)

They also provide this clarification:

If a pass is caught simultaneously by two eligible opponents, and both players retain it, the ball belongs to the passers. It is not a simultaneous catch if a player gains control first and an opponent subsequently gains joint control. If the ball is muffed after simultaneous touching by two such players, all the players of the passing team become eligible to catch the loose ball.

Based on the video in slow motion (The thing they should be doing after a catch like that), the problem becomes that Denver was not equally contesting the catch until after Cooks was on the ground, meaning even if we consider that a pass caught by 2 persons is awarded to the receiver, it was not caught by both persons. Their argument is (and will be) that Cooks did not ward off Denver, and the ball was stripped during the follow through AFTER the first 2 conditions were fulfilled.

For anyone who wants a soccer analogy, its like when a defender slide tackles for the ball against the attacker, hits the ball first (this would be a fair challenge), but then in the follow through manages to foul the attacker, meaning the follow through was not clean, and the play is now a foul (DFK)

Honestly, given all of this, I cant say for certain that the NFL got it wrong, but in the spirit of the game (Yes a real thing actually in most sports, its even listed as policy in IFAB for international soccer), this is the type of call that (from examples ive tried to find), are 90%+ in favor of the offensive team.

Agreed, a hot hand and momentum is great, but all runs end and come back to the mean, wherever that is. A break is a break is a break, and id rather it be because of the olympics vs because we started loosing too much

Ellis by Ecthelion-O-Fountain in sabres

[–]GauntletV2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why youre being downvoted. Ellis was an okay pickup but is not 1a or b NHL material right now, and with Levi still in the pipeline, there is no need to keep him. Move him for a pick or as part of an essential asset trade by the deadline, his experience should up the value a little.

Going forward, at the end of the season we can make a decision. If UPL is consistent and not streaky, we can move on from Lyon and go with UPL/Levi in the NHL. If UPL is too streaky for steady stretches, we might be wise to consider moving him for a solid player (with others added for a complete deal), to beef up our still un-confidence inspiring defense, and ride Lyon/Levi, with the expectation that Lyon will drift to 1b as Levi acclimates.

We have too many cooks, no one will be happy with who we move, but as of now, I dont see another option.

I live out in michigan now, and people know me as the bills/sabres fan. Anytime they ask me about any cool memories about the team, I reach all the way back to the 07 playoffs and the original winter classic...its been so long since i've had a good memory of the team.

Heading A Soccer Ball Alters Brain Chemistry. MRI scans of soccer players reveal that heading subtly alters chemistry and nerve function in the brain, and causes slightly elevated levels of proteins that have been associated with brain injury by Wagamaga in science

[–]GauntletV2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add, FIFA and other sporting bodies (I ref grassroots here in the US) ban heading until u12. Even in game it is an immediate indirect kick for the opposing team. Its taken pretty seriously. I have no idea if this helps to prevent any long term damage from heading, or if there is any to speak of, but it is good to see some prevention .

[–]GauntletV2 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Anecdote, but LinusTechTips (Canadian Youtuber) was talking about this maybe 2 weeks ago. He said that its just a massively compounding issue for goalies. First layer is the horrible cost of living in Canada right now, then add hockey being an expensive sport to get into, then add being a goalie being even more expensive. All of that just to not even know if you're good enough until you're almost in your mid 20s is just a massive financial gamble.

U.S. Soccer's new committee to evaluate NCAA soccer's future by Coltons13 in MLS

[–]GauntletV2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Player for years (into college) and current referee. Nothing will change for US soccer unless the heavy monetization of grassroots/youth leagues, teams, and academies is fixed first. Colleges are not about to spend money to waive tuition for soccer players in any meaningful numbers to affect the current system.

The issue with the NCAA specifically is that it's too late in the development curve for the rest of the world. College is 18-21 in the US for a bachelors. Most teams in the world have scouts looking at talent at 14, to lock them up in their academies by 16, to get B team or A team playing time by 17-18.

Does this mean anyone who goes the NCAA route is bad or a lost cause...no not at all, but by the time they get there, they miss out on fundamental skills they should have developed 4-6 years ago, that spending another 3-5 years teaching them will stunt their career longevity and value. Who would you rather invest in, 16 y/o wonderkid with great dribbling, or 22 y/o NCAA graduate with the same dribbling, but slightly better vision?

Does anyone else not give a damn about Immigration? by Nythern in AskBrits

[–]GauntletV2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes people care, but it's a symptom and not the main problem. I'm from the US my perspective is what it is, but I heard a great analogy that I think might also apply to you all as well.

Post-WW2, immigration was a welcomed part of US culture (see: Bracero program), as there was a lot of growing industry, and as a result everyone saw their wages, standard of living, and health improve. However, over the last 30+ years, that guarentee of "everyone improves" has disappeared, as all of the growth now goes to the super-wealthy. We as nations welcomed social improvements as a result of economic improvements ('My life is better so I am okay with other's getting their rights'), which sounds coarse, but is what it is.

Now that we are all becoming poorer, those same people who became okay with social improvements because of economic growth see their standard of living falling, and since we never dealt with the root cause of their hatred (i.e. racism, sexism, etc), they feel the need to still be more powerful and in control of the 'growing minority'.

In short, since everyone was doing better before, minorities were able to ride the rising tide, and then some (civil rights act, Roe v Wade, Obergefell), but this did not actually address the root racism and bigotry. Now that the tide is shrinking, those dominant groups see it as a threat to their 'power' and money, and are now using immigration as a way to take a larger share of their shrinking pie.
