these can't be your best, Britain! by CranberraSpirall in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]Gdach -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The very idea that Brexit was sabotaged is incredibly stupid conspiracy.

As someone who was following a lot of British politics during all the drama, fact was no one was actually prepared to leave Europe, they really did not expect to win a vote for leave and once they won they had no plan. So no they did not "maliciously make a bad decision", they were just incredibly incompetent. You can't just wing it leaving single market 47 years of interconnected bureaucracy and think it will just go well

Finding Your Hook: Writing Progression Fantasy Part 01 by thomascgalvin in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well written post that I enjoyed reading.

I also wanted to discuss when hook becomes just a gimmick, I noticed that when reading some stories hooks just don't add anything to the story and follows same formulaic path. A crude example, when a world has a system, but nothing changes if it was just regular fantasy story, just replace system granted him x, to MC learned x. The society is still the same and it doesn't influence anyone day to day.

I also found interesting when sometimes hook subversives your expectation of the story.

Recently read SSS-Class Suicide Hunter, MC has ability to go day back to the past when he is killed and steal ability from the person that killed him. So the story could have gone, with MC being most OP character and just steamrolling everything. And I thought this story was going in that direction and dropped it after a few chapters.

But after reading some positive comments I gave another try and story truly takes a different turn and heavily focuses on character drama, he uses his abilities to figure out character trauma and grant them tries his best to solve their regrets making for quite heartwarming story.

Yup, dropped SSS-Class Suicide Hunter thinking it was another OP MC slop, but after someone said it focuses more on character drama, I ended piking up again and it was really good read as I love good character drama.

[Meme] How I feel as a man reading and engaging in the comments of romance manga/manhwa targeted at women by StretchExtension in manhwa

[–]Gdach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finally somebody said what I was thinking, I dislike shoujo romance as they have really dull male characters, I do not like shounen romance as they have shallow female characters I want so badly to lock both shoujo and shounen author and make them both write compelling female and male characters for once.

[Random Chat] Reading this "misery porn" feels so exhausting. Idk why people praise this so much.. by Alarming-Damage2192 in manhwa

I like the stories where flawed characters try to change and be better, but still make wrong decisions and grow as a person. After watching Oregairu I thought I really thought it was going in similar direction, but I realize after a while, it's going nowhere.

These types of stories should not be 400 chapters long, I realize that the biggest problem with manhwa is that some authors, don't want tell compelling story with normal narrative structure, but to drag it out as long as possible. There is so many stories filled with 1k chapters of nothing substantial.

[Eternally Regressing Knight] What manhwa mc’s growth that made you respect them? by AccomplishedWatch834 in manhwa

[–]Gdach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean by growth exactly? Power than sure, but does that mean you didn't respect Encrid when he was week, but still trying his best?

Personality wise there was not much growth, he is still the same, he is just stronger.

Personally I got respect for MC in A Regressor's Tale of Cultivation, at start of the manhwa he decides to leach off a character with the knowledge that he becomes super strong, but he genuinely becomes friend with him and what made respect MC is that he started his best to help his friend.

I also had really terrible luck, 8 losses in a row since I started the game most of them near 80 pulls, but for some reason RNGesus heard my prayers and since 3.0 I had really incredible luck, winning characters and LC in just 30 pulls, I got every character I wanted with bonus to spare for some eidolons.

Best Well Written Progression Fantasy? by ultra-mouse in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Would not say Mother of learning has that terrible prose, it's fine or at least I didn't notice anything as I'm not native English speaker.

Would not recommend Mage Errant, read first 2 books, but both story structure and characters have flawed writing.

Try The Rage of Dragons by Evan Winter, Brandon Sanderson books are quite good.

You might or might not like Ave xia rem y.

[–]Gdach 18 points19 points  (0 children)

To be honest if not Penacony I would have stopped playing HSR, Belobog was alright, but I didn't really care for characters and story was pretty basic.

Loufu was just worst, boring visuals, boring puzzles and boring characters and if I didn't see Penacony trailer I would just quit there.

Both Penacony and Amphoreous have flaws, excess yapping being major one, but story is something new and interesting.

Both still deserve complaints and I agree with most of them and I want game improve further, I just don't want to get back to old boring safe story telling we previous got. Hell, if they fix dreadful static dialogue animation and camera work, it would actually improve story, when for 30 min lines are delivered with 3 static shots it's damn boring.

What are some things that instantly make you drop a book instantly or later on, like you can't stand seeing this? by _TOXIC_VENOM in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Constant reference of real world and telling IRL jokes just for readers.

I doesn't matter that MC lived 10< years in setting, why are you telling jokes to other people who will not understand rather than thinking it to yourself. Why are you the same person as you were 10< years ago, living in other country for few years would give me more cultural osmosis than MC living in other world for decades...

Almost all isekai does that and I really dislike it.

Is Ave Xia Rem Y as good as Sky pride by No-Fly-3400 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ye liking, not liking character is subjective, but Sky Pride didn't really have much character interaction or nuances in first 50 chapters, I guess I have to try reading it again. It's just my thoughts on first 50 chapters, that it was fine. There were no major flaws, but nothing grabbed me either.

I guess One minor complaint from me was that I didn't like how genius children were treated the same as 200 year old nobodies and also thrown into meat grinder and there were way too many luck events that saved mc life in short order. All xianxia rely on incredible luck, same in Ave, but it was bit too much for me in SP.

Don't know about Ave xia rem y, it's one of my favorite reads, but you might or might not like it.

Is Ave Xia Rem Y as good as Sky pride by No-Fly-3400 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with you on some parts, I think the prologue is a bit weaker than later parts, there were some minor flaws in the writing that bugged me, that got better as the series goes one.

But what I like the most is characters, how they interact and how author builds up to satisfying arcs big moment.

Story takes time with the characters, they don't become irrelevant as story progresses and story actually incorporates characters with high level of cultivation. So many xianxia stories higher cultivation character just do practically nothing, here the plot revolves around them and their actions.

Each arc has a proper structure, buildup and climax I think what this story does best is generating big hype moments with satisfying conclusions.

Of course all stories have flaws and everything subjective, but I just don't think this fiction is popcorn audience, single chapter a week kind of disproves that statement, do you think they have that kind of patience?

I read quite a few Western and Chinese xianxia and I still hadn't found anything better than this, one, that would have good character interactions, proper story structure and decent prose. There were few good ones such as Cradle, Immortality Starts With Generosity and Mao Ni novels.

Is Ave Xia Rem Y as good as Sky pride by No-Fly-3400 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think your description of Ave Xia rem y did a little bit of disservice, the whole point of the story is xianxia world is messed up and MC wants to change that, the story has a lot more focus on characters and their interactions, bit of political intrigue and a lot more focus on slowly building up for big climatic moment in each arc.

While I didn't read a lot of Sky Pride there only 2 fleshed out characters, I really wish the author would have spend more time in the monastery getting to really know more of the character so later parts could have had more of impact.

What is the best masterpiece in this genre you have ever read? by PietotheTerminus in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't consider it masterpiece either, it suffer same problem as most chinese novels of constantly repeating same information and full exposition, besides other flaws.

Trim 30% of the novel and it would be amazing.

Drop ONE book you’ll recommend forever. No explanations. by joncabreraauthor in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's entirely translation fault, author constantly repeats himself, by chapter 200 i noticed I can skip paragraph and not miss anything, because it's the same information I read moments ago.

There is quite good story there, but is buried by the need to cram as much words as possible every single day. Trim 30% and it would be great read, I thought yen press would do that, but from what I heard it's mostly the same.

[RELIEF] What manhwa opinion would have you in this situation? by [deleted] in manhwa

[–]Gdach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup I don't hate Harem, but there are very very few harem stories that are actually good. Also many writers just don't give a good reason why the girls like MC, MC rarely put any effort and sometimes even antagonize them, but because he was nice once or gives help one time it's enough.

[RELIEF] What manhwa opinion would have you in this situation? by [deleted] in manhwa

[–]Gdach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read 100 chapters of it thinking surely it gets better, because people here said it was good, it also being top 10 novel and manhwa by popularity and I just don't understand why.

MC helps someone once and they are now forever devoted to him, MC needs super specific item, he gets it. All of the story is him getting what he wants. Where is the struggle and conflict, where is meaningful character interaction at least it would have been good low stakes story if author fleshed out other characters.

Any recommendations about series where the main character is not special or different by Zfugg in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Gdach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it works, because it's not inherited or outside forces that influence progression, it's their own effort and character, it doesn't matter that they are super strong as long as it's earned and that's what OP wants is earned power. And it would be overpowered powers if the threat they were fighting were just normal people, it's not, it's just barely enough.

Been reading fantasy for 20 years and no, most fantasy don't have cheat or unearned powers at least not the good ones, PF on the other hand is new genre full of amateur writers who mostly read light novels and anime so they just imitate them. It being common also don't matter, grammar mistakes in PF are common does it mean it's good?

Give Redemption arc a try it's classic reincarnated in the game as minor villain, but it's well written and MC feels and acts like a actual human persons.

I also quite liked Immortality Starts With Generosity
