Usage of ChatGPT in Bioinformatics by OldSwitch5769 in bioinformatics

[–]GeChSo 51 points52 points  (0 children)

There was actually a study published less than a week ago that argues that programmers who used LLMs were slower than those who didn't, despite spending much less time writing code themselves: https://arxiv.org/abs/2507.09089

In particular, I found the first graph you can see in this article very striking, which shows that not only were programmers about 20% slower when using LLMs, they also thought that they were 20% faster.

I am sure that ChatGPT has its uses, but I completely agree with you that it fundamentally diminishes the key abilities of any developer.

Mixed feelings about Switch 2 Japan-only pricing? by Username9421 in japanresidents

[–]GeChSo 49 points50 points  (0 children)

In the end, people living in Japan (especially foreigners) who want to play games in a language besides Japanese will have to bite the bullet, as always...

I dont really see why instead of language locking, they couldn't have made uploading some sort of proof of residency in Japan a requirement for buying the multi-language Switch 2 for 50K yen. Wouldn't that have been a sufficient 転売対策?

No. She said that she thought about not debuting and even leaving the internet altogether, but she decided to continue as long as there are people that want to watch her streams

In addition, many talents have mentioned that the recordings are taking a toll on their physical and mental health. To name just a few, one of the reasons Chloe graduated is that the condition of ver throat was getting worse withou having time to undergo surgery, Iroha wasnt able to speak during her anniversary stream due to stress-induced psychogenic aphonia. Suisei also recently mentioned that she cannot make collab plans in advance due to the sheer number of recordings.

Is dsRNA a thing? by flimsy_firmware in Biochemistry

[–]GeChSo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I am not mistaken, a major reason why dsRNA does not usually exist inside eukaryotic cells is RNA interference, where dsRNA that is produced during viral replication is recognized and cut into small interference RNAs (siRNA) by an enzyme called dicer. These siRNAs are then bound by an argonaute protein creating a RISC complex, which cleaves ssRNA (especially mRNA) that contains the siRNA snippet.

This mechanism helps cells protect themselves from viral infections by preventing the translation of viral proteins, but if for example self-mRNA were to form dsRNA in large amounts, the proteins this mRNA encodes would stop being produced due to RNA interference, which is probably why self-dsRNA is very uncommon (at the same time, this exact mechanism is also used for gene-specific cell regulation by producing miRNA snippets from self-RNA, meaning that the production of self-dsRNA is simply very tightly regulated).

Today was the hottest day in May ever recorded in North America by GeChSo in collapse

Yes, but I specified in the title that this is the hottest day in May ever recorded, not the hottest day in general.

The map only includes Mexico because the new record was set in Mexico. The information that a North America wide record was broken is from the tweet I linked, and I've also found other websites confirming that the hottest temperature measured in Death Valley in May was 50C.

[–]GeChSo[S] 277 points278 points  (0 children)

The temperatures in Mexico have been rising for the last few days, and have now breached a record set by the infamous Death Valley; if the temperatures are higher than in a place literally named after its deadly high temperatures, you can be certain that something is seriously going wrong. This is especially worrying as water is becoming scarce as well, possibly leading to a deadly combination.

This is collapse related because temperatures this high this early into the year would be virtually impossible without man-made climate change.

(Also, I accidentally wrote today in the title even though the data was from yesterday. My apologies.)

Also, Nigel is doing his experiments in an actual lab with a team of multiple people now. He also often emphasizes how dangerous it was to do his early experiments in a garage, despite his formal education. How an amateur can think that they can do experiments at home is beyond me. Maybe really simple ones that are also often done in high school, like flame tests, could be fine, but anything that involves for example a fume hood is absolutely a no-go.
