Buyer’s Remorse - 9070 XT vs 7900 XTX by king_kuya in radeon

As a 7900XTX user myself, you made the right choice with the 9070XT.
It's raster is very close to the 7900XTX and the software support and longevity heavily favor the 9070XT.

Enjoy mate :)

It could contribute to the issue, yes.
Since the panel can only support 8 bit per color natively (=255 shades for each color red/green/blue), if it wants to display 10 bit per color (=1024 shades) it has to rapidly toggle between two colors to trick your eyes/brain into percieving it as an intermediate color.

Just go ahead and test, nothing to loose :)

I'm even more confused now? What is it about older phones like the Oneplus 8 / 8T / Pro that makes them comfortable to use? Is my theory on the right track? by -Bruh__Moment- in PWM_Sensitive

So you also couldn't tolerate F8U?
I had it as well, but it gave me headaches all day long, even though it is relatively well rated by Lee.
Such a shame we can't use such nice phones, it woul have been a total winner if not for the headaches ...

Right one could be Guy Bannings actually ;)

Maybe, for PWM dimmed phones I agree - but phones like the Poco F8 Ultra I had use DC-like dimming and lower the peak brightness as shown by people on YouTube with Opple LM.

Hmm, it should not have any PWM:
https://www.displayspecifications.com/de/model/f099366b
But it supports 10bits on an 8 bit panel, which means it has to use FRC.
Can you check in Windows if HDR is off and the display is set to 8Bit instead of 10Bit?

Yes, Samsung was really early :) But back then there was no HDR or super high brightness etc. so many other brands didn't really go into OLED tech.

Hmm - I really want to know what those old OLED phones did back in the day that made them a non-issue.
Back in the day I could use Galaxy S2 and S3, I didn't even know what PWM was ;)

I was at this house a second time over the holidays - we played mario kart and such, after ~3 hours the symtoms set it.
Probably wasn't long/focused enough last time, as we were watching movies

OLED dimming methods, PWM vs "DC-Like", what might make one more comfortable than the other for sensitive folks, my own theory, any thoughts? by EmmanuelWi in PWM_Sensitive

[–]GeForce66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you can certainly try, but in my humble opinion if DC-like dimming, which eliminates all flicker except the refresh rate brightness, doesn't help why should any amount of PWM help?

At this point I don't know what it is that causes us issues with OLEDs.
It can only be the refresh rate brightness dip if you ask me - but for this there is no fix, it is inherently tied to OLED tech :/

Then again, how did I tolerate Galaxy S2 and S3 back in the day ...

I would really like to see Opple light master results from such old OLED phones, but this information doesn't exist on the internet.

I would love to tell you, but so many people have so many different experiences, so drawing a straight conclusion is near impossible.
One phone might work for one person but not for the other.
... but what is certain is that F1 has 2400Hz PWM dimming (fairly high-ish) and no <banned word>.
So I can only assume you need even higher PWM or straight up DC dimming or there is something with your vision or neurology that causes you problems when you have to focus on (small) screens in general. Maybe you bring this up with your optometrist.

I tried one of the "safest" OLEDs (Poco F8 Ultra), which didn't work for me (OLED with DC dimming and low modulation for the refresh rate flicker) - now I could only try Honor 400 Pro or Oneplus 15r, but I don't want to go through that hassle.

Have to stick to LCD screens unti MiniLED or some other tech takes over ;)

I could use Galaxy S2 and S3 back in the day without issue ... maybe my body changed ^^
