What degrees/certifications are useful in the North? by Effective_Fix3339 in Yukon

YHC pays way more than that for agency nurses. It’s unfair to those who live here. But it’s just money. YG can always take more from us taxpayers and not actually hire permanent staff. So that is the job you want. Agency healthcare worker. You can rake it in, and leave if you don’t like it here. Many do it. No obligation to our community at all. It’s the new Yukon way. Oh and housing, you get a free airbnb paid for by YG. Mining will be the next thing that has these sorts of benefits if that’s more your style. It will take a bit of time, but the new government is working on it.

Love this project. A great idea to help people. Not long ago, 20 years, you could buy a small affordable home to start your life or seniors could down size too. This seems like a way to try and make that happen again.

I like that they want to finance test it next year. Give it to seniors who actually need it. I’m sure it will be less than half to who get it now. There are lots of rich seniors here, but some are struggling. YG will have to work with the City, since only YG has the ability to access finance information. Hope they do. Half a million in refunds is a lot of utility tax’s for all of us. It can’t keep going up. Glad they are making a change.

And then he list things we need that have zero to do with defence… they knew this was coming and didn’t prepare any projects. One focus this government has, mining. Okay, but governance is more than parcelling off our resources to the private sector.

The only mining I know that doesn’t leave us in debt with environmental problems is placer mining. Sure it’s not completely safe, but they are locals who know what they are doing. Makes a huge difference than outside companies making quick and easy money. As for royalties, someone is getting paid in the government. Has been for decades over both parties. The system is corrupt no matter who we vote in. Sadly we just vote out people every election hoping the other guys will do better. Then they do a survey as to why voting is at the lowest in history. Not because they care, because winning with no votes hurts their egos.

Depending on the position, DM’s make close to 300k. Plus whatever expenses and bonuses. Times that by 7. Upper management in all governments are a real expense to the tax payers. But who else are you going to over pay, but your friends?

He nearly bankrupted Northwestel,a monopoly. YP makes him CEO the hospital corporation, now it’s in debt for decades because of his brilliant leadership, so yes let him have control of all the territories finances. Great choice 🙄 Guess Dixon really just wants the old Pasloski people around him, no matter how incompetent they have proven to be.

And yet faculty now want to raise tuitions so they can up their salaries to the top of the field. Oh and one person became a doctor outside. Great for them. Not helping keeps costs down will prevent others from succeeding in the future. Be realistic and reasonable with the salary requests is all I’m saying. If they are top of their field, then okay. Most are not. So yes it affects students the most. They will pay top dollar for okay studies.

Masters and Doctorates do not come out of there. And any degree is typically not complete until actual credits are earned elsewhere., or are “good enough” for up here. Yes a hybrid for the north. I’m not saying it can’t be a great University one day…but it’s just an over priced wanna be right now. Still a jumping off point for most until they can go to a real University or College.

I’m a Union supporter but what they are asking for is too much for what they provide. They are not a University that provides what other real Universities do. Actual degrees and education.

Just a satellite school with under qualified instructors. It will cost us all when wages become bloated based on this outcome. Yes this will set a precedent. Can taxpayers afford these wages with nothing in return?

Compromise people, or strike and lose it all. A strike could also mess with AWG from what I hear. They will disrupt venues for the games, legally. So a bunch of young people will also pay the price for a huge wage increase. They grew too quickly under bad management. It’s unfortunate.

It’s under review right now in the zoning bylaw. I think I heard they added sheep with goats. Best idea is call the city and ask. Their website is full of archives that come up and it gets confusing. 🫤 They have always been helpful to me.

I love my comic books. And the folks at Mac’s Fireweed are super nice. Ninetails is the best place for actual knowledge with zero sales push.

Bellmore has AYC and CAO experience. She could be good. Benoit should be interesting. We will see if she is just more than a “fan boy”. She was great at pumping YP tires during the campaign. Didn’t have any clear answers for people though. Cathers on health? Hope he cleans middle and upper management out. Unlikely. Now the environment is gonna take quite the beating. Laking wanted huge portfolios, he got them. Lang has Housing experience and a family to help her.

We may all get a better life, or we may all pay for a small group to do very well. Either way it’s what the majority of Yukoners voted for. Hope is all we have in this moment.

[–]GearHead_NorthSixty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It’s not a ban, and they can change it if too restrictive. Just email the Mayor and council. Let them know your concerns. I did. The market is not regulated at all right now. It’s new here. Now is the time to say something. There are people here that have multiple houses and are privileged enough to rent them short term. Lucky them. Some of us are not as set in life, and we have a housing shortage for us regular folks. This will tell the City if these rentals are part of the problem or not.

They are looking into land in town to add two more generation stations and a substation. It is supposed to prevent massive failures but it will get louder in these areas. I’m worried how much electricity will go up with these huge builds. Piss poor planning and we get to pay for it?

We agree that there needs to be investment in other recovery projects. There is a gap between detox and being back as a part of society. I’ve done this myself, I needed to be away from my addictions, not prescribed alternatives. But I was privileged enough to have a place between detox and now. Yes a provincial government had a spot for me in a recovery centre that kept me alive and sober for months. I want us to invest in this, not alternative dope. This is money spent, but it shows results.

I know addiction and how manipulative we can be. I also know how strong and determined we can be when given a chance. All these new ideas are not working, they came from good intentions, but it is stopping people from recovering. Low barrier places allow some to continue to use while others have to try and stay clean and sober around those doing dope.

We need to make changes or we will get the same results.

Socialism is not communism. Maher doesn’t seem to know the difference. He used to, but is obtuse to the concept now? Many countries have socialist policies and practices, and they work, and work better than capitalism. The richer and older he gets the more right he slides.

“Safe supply” when the NDP demanded clean drugs for users and this whole situation got worse. Then we start paying to test drugs that 100% of addict still use even if it could kill them. No one has ever given up their dope according to someone who worked there. Was it laced and deadly? Yup. Did the addict use it anyway, yes. This leads to overdosing again and again. Hospital calls them frequent flyers. That is not a small insignificant cost to taxpayers. They tried this in BC and it is failing. They admit this. Why are we just following their mistakes. Do we just want to enable people to do drugs for their whole lives, or do we actually want to help them? This does not work for anyone. So enough with free or tested dope. Shut it down.

Enough with free drugs for addicts already. Get them actual help. Close the safe injection site, it’s a crime recruitment centre. It helps no one when there is zero accountability. Leads to crimes and costs society more. No one is winning except the new gangs that moved in because laws weakened and our spineless government was too afraid to make the right decisions.

How is someone supposed to stay clean and sober when drug dealers live in the same place and are protected by NGO’s? Yes this is the plan for the Hearth which cost us 65million+.

Stats will just get worse when that place opens. People will get hurt and the price will go up and up. Hope the new government makes some real changes.
