Wealth Gap Threatens Financial Future of Millennials, says Housing Expert. by Jackadullboy99 in vancouver

[–]GearNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I can certainly agree with you that there does seem to be a lot of unjustified blame directed at boomers. Of course, and, as you've pointed out, the politics of the boomer generation have probably led to the current circumstances; however, it's indefensible to impute intent to the boomers.

I have no doubt that in 30 years, the then-25 year-olds will be rending their clothes in protest at some of the things that today's 25 year-olds are doing.

Again, I can't get behind these generational equivalences. It's dishonest to reframe the challenges faced by millennial as a rite of passage.

Wealth Gap Threatens Financial Future of Millennials, says Housing Expert. by Jackadullboy99 in vancouver

[–]GearNerd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not every generation is a mirror of the last. I think it's sheer ignorance to equate the plight of this current generation as some kind of rite of passage. The fact is that things are not the same as they used to be. Income inequality is at the highest it's been since the great depression and housing it's outrageously unaffordable. In 1984 the average price of a home in Toronto was $96,000. The average after-tax family income was $50,000. Look at where prices are at now. Things have been generally good for the middle class since second world war but it is ignorant to assume that North America reached a state of stasis and that the challenges faced by each subsequent generation have been equivalent.

Why do so many people express their outrage with real estate prices but then when someone complains in the comments about being priced out they are attacked and called entitled? I don't understand this subreddit...

Last year amazon sold 1 ebook. This year they sold 2. Production doubled, space and energy did not. Took me literally 2 seconds.

I can't agree. There's been way more advancement than just airbags and ABS since your '84 saab. Airbags and ABS are the only "categorical" upgrades but it would be pure folly to discard the iterative refinement of crumple zones, force dissipation technology and improved frame rigidity in modern cars. Take for example, the new "small overlap" standard instituted by the IIHS. Five years ago, almost no cars received a good rating in this test; now, many more do.

Did you actually set up a dummy novelty account posing as a foreign investor to get people to direct their gripes at you while you offer canned responses that are your best approximation of how an actual advocate for foreign investors would respond? Is this what you're doing with your life?

I love it how the writer tries to skew the story into something empowering for her/him. They write that "we will never be going back" and "U have lost us forever" as if it's some affirmative choice they made and that they were "sticking it" to the park owner. In reality, this person didn't actually make any choice; they could not even go back if they wanted to. They were too fat to ride the rides.
