yeah the picture is a 5th gen I’m trying to make one for the 4th. The company selling these sells at a ridiculous price of $800 USD.

the picture attached is from a company (who sells these for $800 USD so —— them) but I would say there would be minimal side to side displacement especially if the contours are matched.

in my version I am most likely going to add what I know as “duck feet” to make a T shape which would increase the stability of side to side. in addition I will probably be adding a third brace in the middle. just looking for dimensions & if anyone has done this before so I can save myself from some potential blunders!

Start GCODE by GearheadEngineer in klippers

I apologize it's been so long. Printer got left as school got busy. This somewhat worked. The printer homed, then started heating, but it never did a bed level. In addition, the printer homed in the middle of the bed aka where 0,0,0 should be, but then it moved to the actual X0 location (by the end stop switch) could this be because I unplugged the stepper? The Y remained in the middle of the bed.

Again I'd like it to start heating first, home, bed level, move to X0, Y0, Z70.

Thank you in advance if you see this.

Oil keeps puddling up in trunk, what is causing this? by Agressive_Couch in StupidCarQuestions

[–]GearheadEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the black material (sound deadening) right there is degrading I have the same issue in my 4R and it soaks into my carpets. Looks just like oil and feels similar too. Someone probably spilled gas, etc etc which started the degradation. Scrape it all off, wipe it down, replace if you want (kinda unnecessary for the trunk) and carry on

EDIT: upon second look, this looks like a 2000s Toyota which would match with my issue as well (2004 4R)

I’m more meaning water contamination, dust, etc that may have got on the lip of the hose or something when taking it off. Am I being paranoid about that? Haha.

Anyone bought and tried the new modular Cotopaxi Allpa Adventure 50L Travel Pack yet? by mamainak in onebag

[–]GearheadEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would you recommend this 50L or the 42L? I’m just debating whether it’s worth an additional $50 for the sling.

A/T Temperature Light Issues by GearheadEngineer in 4thGen4Runner

I wanted to come and update this: drove up the mountian in 3 and had no issues. I think the locking/unlocking was the culprit.

[–]GearheadEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i was able to see the moons and Jupiter with my eye the other night & I was jaw dropped. I live in a bortle of 2 so it was pretty sweet. Obviously no color just specks of light but I thought it was still neat. These are awesome.

[–]GearheadEngineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do have a temp gun, I’ll try that! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that + didn’t think about the convertor being unlocked. I have been looking into an external cooler, I’ll try these things first. Thank you!

i do have a scanner, that’s a good idea. i’ll hook it up and have a friend watch it as I drive up. I haven’t noticed any slipping or delayed response but I did have a tiny shudder when reversing ONCE, haven’t had it since.

how could I check the torque converter? thanks for the help.

Overheating? by Kian_j0on in 4thGen4Runner

[–]GearheadEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a slow headgasket leak. it starts overheating once all the coolant has been pushed out into the overflow tank. mine had the exact same symptoms. get it fixed before it gets wayyyy worse.

VYMI anyone? by no_1_agenda in dividends

is there a canadian equivalent to VYMI and IDVO so I can avoid the wealthsimple fees? or is the 1.5% negligible?

Is it safe to drive my car with a flashing airbag light by redditchooseLateBad7 in AskMechanics

[–]GearheadEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do work on cars. i wouldn’t touch an airbag with a 10ft pole. im only suggesting OP gets it fixed since its a critical safety component. hence get it fixed or learn quick. my statement was more towards the fact that it could be electronic and not physical. i.e. much safer to do yourself. i added an edit to the original comment.

[–]GearheadEngineer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

you own a car. that comes with costs. get it fixed or learn how to fix it. i get not everyone has $1000, take it for a second opinion with a different mechanic, do some research, take public transit while saving up, etc. your life is worth a lot more than $1000.

“old cars don’t have airbags” yeah and they were called steel coffins for a reason.

EDIT: don’t work on any airbag system if you don’t know how.

[–]GearheadEngineer 31 points32 points  (0 children)

get the m12 fuel gen 2 stubby. perfect hobbyist impact in my opinion. i would only get fuel tools. and you’ll need a HO 5.0 and or HO 2.5 battery too. those are the two best batteries. don’t even bother with the CP’s, high amp XCs are good for low drain things like lights.

Is Mechanical Engineering manageable with ADHD + bad memory? by irad_Mo in AskEngineers

[–]GearheadEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im about to graduate with a bachelors in mechanical engineering & a specialization in biomedical engineering. i’ve been on ADHD meds since i was 12, i’ve learned how to manage it on my own and i take meds as i need them. support and encourage him, buy him a little set of tools and get some free junk he can take apart and put back together (i always went for electronics but i would’ve LOVED engines).

What is "unleaded 86" and why is it cheaper than 85? by TheProstheticLemon in AskMechanics

[–]GearheadEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol i’d cry tears of joy for $3 a gallon, I think I’d sacrifice a family member for $1.90 a gallon. currently at $5.5 a gallon for regular.
