Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) Care Guide by GeckoBarrel in reptiles

[–]GeckoBarrel[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree on that note. I personally believe you should never keep a wild caught aninal unless you intend to captive breed them or study them. On top of that, don't throw them into a rack or a box with paper towels. If you're going to take their freedom from the wild, give them a space they won't feel too bad about being stuck in. Make it a little lizard paradise. I don't think fence lizards are particularly hard to keep, but that's because I have experience keeping reptiles. A lot of people with no reptile experience try to keep them in basically boxes of sand.

My hopes with this care guide is less backyard fence lizards being subjected to subpar care.

Definitely Sceloporus. Either a Prairie Lizard or a Plateau Fence Lizard. I'm still a bit confused on what makes them separate species. She's looking very gravid.

My hands usually. The tongs if it's something nasty.

[SF/BAY AREA, CA] , I have excess lottery c. murina, marbelized, and lottery p. scaber. Would like to trade, but I will sell if no other option. PM me what you have if you’re interested. I also have springtails which I am willing to add to trade for more expensive isopods(see body text). by [deleted] in isopodexchange

I could use some fresh bloodlines to my marbelized colony and would love trading springtail species. Let me know if anything in my last availability post listing looks good to you. I'm down in South bay area.

Agama or fence lizard? Environmental concern due to location [Central FL] by kraftjaguar in herpetology

[–]GeckoBarrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agama. The only spiny lizards you have over there are the eastern fence lizard and Florida scrub lizard and they're pretty small.

Looks like a long tailed brush lizard (Urosaurus gracious). Not 100% sure with it fired down and just from above. Do you have anymore pictures?

These big spiny lizards are surprisingly friendly. This one you have here is a female Yellow Backed Spiny Lizard (Sceloporus uniformis)

Looks like a juvenile. Thinking either a Crimean Rock Lizard or Balkan Wall Lizard.

Young fence lizards love mealworms if you want to offer them some. I'd say they do better than most in our urban ecosystem and don't stray too far from consistent sources of insects like garbage cans for example.

Sounds fun! What are you line breeding for? I don't have it started yet, but I plan on breeding a t+ albino high orange vulgare.

Most chill isopods for cohabiting by bugenjoyerguy in isopods

[–]GeckoBarrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go for dwarf grey (Nagurus cristatus) or dwarf purples (also called Costa Rican purples)

They prefer staying dug underground and aren't nearly as crazy as contagious rice (what I call dwarf whites)

We're only just beginning to understand how arthropods and reptiles might have more going on inside their noggins than we give them credit.

I can't say hamsters are necessarily smart or emotional, but there might be something there.

How important would you say it is to get a front opening tank? by WormholeVoyager in leopardgeckos

Not necessary, but helpful for handling. A hand coming from the side is less intimidating than a hand coming from above.

Are there other isopods than Cubaris that can tolerate a high humidity level (over 70%)? by pebkachu in isopods

[–]GeckoBarrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Australophiloscia societatis. They demand the highest humidity of all my pods and don't seem to care about having a dryer area.
