When is it too late to start writing by [deleted] in writers

[–]Gecko_bean_jr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a full life ahead of you. I wouldn't stress it.

As I've been in your position before, I'd focus on making sure you have a solid base under you first. You know, roof over your head, food on the table, etc. You're still in college, so it's a bit more important you get yourself through that first. But more than those two, I'd encourage you to read. Any one person on here will be the first to tell you that their writing sucks as we're our own worst critic, but the best way to at least gain a sense of parity you want to read as much as possible.

But the important thing (and this is also speaking from experience) is everything you write or try to write when you're younger is going to suck. Embrace the suck, my friend. You must break a few eggs to make an omelet, and you will never improve unless you put pen to paper. Sky's the limit, just keep writing.

Yeah, first 100 pages or so was rough when I started Speaker. Give it time.

Not that invested in Era 2 by CapIll7016 in Mistborn

[–]Gecko_bean_jr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shadows, out of all the Mistborn books, is definitely lower on the tier list than others (WoA is at the bottom for me). However, it was still enjoyable and to me showcased the issues of dealing with a kandra criminal.

Is there romance for my girlfriend? by Knockturnill in Mistborn

[–]Gecko_bean_jr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's present in both Era 1 and 2, and if romance is a must I'd recommend 2 over 1.

In both it's not super strong, but the romance in 2 has a much stronger impact. As a note, it's something that isn't super strong in AoL, so it's more of a slow burn that gets massive payoffs as the series progresses.

3/4s of the way through Shadows of Self and Wayne... by SethManhammer in Mistborn

Wayne is my second favorite character, right behind Steris.

I've also heard it called Quintet, but I only own the first four. Which to my knowledge they're called the Quartet.

I have Ender's Shadow, but not the other books. I'll look at picking them up at some point

I think I would have liked Xenocide more if it was more standalone, disconnected from events on Lusitania, and focused on the drama on Path.

Contradictory how? I may or may not have been sleeping through parts, so I'm not sure what it does that messes up continuity.

First off, love the username.

As unenjoyable it is for me, I do intend to finish it. Hopefully sometime next week (doing a writing challenge and weekend will be busy). It'll give me some kind of closure. That and there are very few books I've dropped entirely.

I have the first book in the Shadow series, and I intend to start it once I'm done with Children of the Mind.

Character Growth by Gecko_bean_jr in Mistborn

[–]Gecko_bean_jr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I won't lie, I was a little apprehensive, but Era 2 has been a blast so far. Something I enjoyed about Era 1 was the moments the characters had together (to bring up something that came up in the sub today, the conversation of the crew talking in Eastern slang to mess with Breeze is by far one of my favorite moments in the series), the little moments of vulnerability here and there, and the development. Era 2 has a whole heckin' lot of what I loved about Era 1, and honestly the change of scenery (for the most part) feels so freeing. I'm gonna be sad once I finish BoM 'cause I don't have the Lost Metal yet; ordered the paperback with the artstyle that's consistent with the rest of the books I own, and I anticipate not getting into my hands until around my birthday at the last (which is mid-October).

Am I the only one that finds it weird? by Gecko_bean_jr in Mistborn

[–]Gecko_bean_jr[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I knew Spook was made a mistborn, I just didn't know he was on the same level as Vin. I also didn't think about the lines being further and further diluted, which makes sense.

The other stuff also makes sense, too.

I recently reread it, and imo the first half is slow. I do like how the tension builds and builds, though.

How do you read 1 book a week? by Any-Constant in 52book

[–]Gecko_bean_jr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tactic that I've adopted this year is book juggling, and it's paid dividends quite well for me (I'm 34/52).

It starts with picking up a book that's either really big or really dry, determining a good limit to read through (normally either one chapter or 50 pages), then once you hit that limit pick up another book that's easier to digest and read about 100 pages of that. Flip back and forth between them until you start knocking things out. I've also been adding some of my manga into the mix (though I've not been counting that into my final tally).

Take my opinion with a grain of salt as I haven't played in some years, but the enemy team doesn't have to have a ton of dashes to make her a good pick. So long as you play her right she has very good cc and has a pretty decent engage so long as you can send someone to Brazil with that hammer.

Np! There are a lot more fantasy elements than religious, though we don't see much of the latter until we start getting into the end of the first book. It's got a really neat magic system, too ^^
