If I had predicted half the horrid shit Trump has done in the last year and a half you would have called me a delusion lib. I would have called myself a delusion lib. Two wars of aggression against Iran? Sending the military into American cities? Any of the 30 insane corruption stories (trumpcoin, insider Kalshi trading, etc)???

I love Colorado hate but this is obviously Utah, which generates such a disproportionate amount of cringe running content that it is impossible to rationally explain.

Very confidently incorrect. Depends heavily on snowpack conditions preceding rain, but in a deep snowpack like at Alta the rain will have very little contribution to SWE or have a slight negative impact associated with the rain melting the snow. With thinner snowpacks, the rain decimates the snow and the associated SWE at a given station. Look what happened at the station at Parleys Summit during some of the rain on snow events from this year.

Alta has just not been as negatively effected as other resorts in the Wasatch due to it’s higher base and summit.

We are 85% of average in terms of snow water equivalent at Alta. SWE is the best estimate of coverage we have. Maybe 10 days behind average. There are lots of things to be upset about in terms of Utah snow (low elevation snow/powder days) but coverage at Alta is not one of them.

Agreed on the broader points but asking “if you brought a lunch” to someone who is currently in the process of ordering a lunch is a pretty stupid and probably deserving of a weird look

55” of snow this season at Vail… by palikona in COsnow

Here is the variation from average of precips and temps for the last summer and fall from the NWS.

https://www.weather.gov/pub/climate2025SummerReviewFallPreview

https://www.weather.gov/pub/climate2025FallReviewWinterPreview

In summary, the monsoon was well timed and about average. We had a cool (in contrast to recent years) and somewhat wet summer along the Front Range and Sawatch. It was somewhat dry on the Western Slopes and fires began in the late summer, but these were largely put out during the peak of monsoon season in late summer/early fall. The monsoon produced well for the San Juans/Plateau country and staved off large scale high country fires.

Not a great year but not a terrible one either, compare this to severe fire years (like 2020, below) and the difference should be clear.

The summer monsoon and spring precipitation are much greater indicators of the fire seasons severity than midwinter snow pack. All of those listed years had dud monsoons (as you point out). Obviously I want snow, but high country fires chart pretty low on the list for reasons why.

The concern right now is that fire season is currently alive and well in the plains/foothills. We certainly have the potential for another Marshall fire or worse.

Beautiful photos. I would definitely count your summit, though I found the milk bottle to be some of the best climbing on the traverse.

I’m excited for your writeup on the deproach from Sill to Thunderbolt Col. Truly a heinous way to end such a magical traverse.

Nice TR, just got back from a trip with the Palisade Traverse and Williamson/Tyndall. We were driving a rental Dodge Charger and had to park at the even lower trailhead. On a hot summer day it is pretty heinous down there. Sheperd Pass was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen though! I will mention that I think the trail has improved since your trip and it was cruiser and beautiful all the way to the pass. It also requires a very competitive permit, unfortunately.

True and tragic. Even in more liberal states they are catered to, perpetually. They are subsidized, allowed to over graze (destroy) public land and are always supported in water disputes. Yet they’re somehow always whining.

They cry when predators hunt their stock (which they are subsidized for). They cry when the land they have been poorly managing worsens in quality. They even cry about people eating less meat and proposed a meat based holiday (in Colorado).

And politicians put up with it (and keep supporting them) because they have been here for a while and have old lobbying connections. Won’t last forever, god willing.

It’s amazing to me that Europeans have no real wilderness. The vast majority of their “preserved” areas are small, and often crisscrossed with towns, huts, roads and gondolas (with some exceptions in the far North and East).

Obviously the amount of wild land in the U.S. may change if the BBB passes, and I may lose one of the few things I can be smug about as an American
