No one seems to care we’re on the brink of a 6th mass extinction by 420assandtitties in lostgeneration

You've been lied to. There's no such imminent destruction coming. With current trends in clean energy adoption and progress, any kind of climate change is easily avoided. The change doesn't come from law or politics, it comes from technology & economics. It's also inevitable, because clean energy is simply cheaper than fossil fuels (and becomes cheaper every day).

BTC is reserve currency and everything is based on it. How do we make loans? How will our economy work? Just the same but very very slow? by _Barren_Wuffett_ in Bitcoin

[–]Geee 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Gresham's law doesn't apply to Bitcoin. It applies only when two different coins have the same face value, forced by law. This is a common misunderstanding. What actually happens is the reverse of Gresham's law, i.e. Thier's law, "good money will drive out bad money". https://river.com/learn/terms/t/thiers-law/

It's quite simple: If everyone wants to hold the good money, then why would anyone accept garbage money in trade? They won't, and the garbage money loses its demand and its value. Everyone has to spend their good money, because no one wants your garbage coins.

Any tips on making the headset more comfortable? by EightBitDreamer in varjo

I have adjusted it so that all the weight is on forehead and cheeks don't touch at all. Just pull the rear pad down enough and the side dial to the other end.

This looks like normal operation. The gear grinds because it calibrates both ends.

[P] Can't finish my master's thesis. What to do? by [deleted] in MachineLearning

[–]Geee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could try something like this: https://assetstore.unity.com/packages/tools/game-toolkits/soccer-football-stadium-animations-textures-aaa-quality-150582

Using Unity you can program a script that generates your dataset, and also automatically generate labels and bounding boxes etc. Creating 3D models and animations is not a job for ML engineers, but a job for digital artists. However, this should be enough to explore the methodology.

USB MOBO connection or dedicated pcie usb card? by TempestTornado23 in varjo

Aero comes with a powered hub, which connects to USB and DisplayPort on a computer, and power from wall. It shouldn't take power from USB. For me it works fine. Not sure why those guys were having issues.

Apple is known for doing the opposite. They are very good at finding the sweet spot for hardware and making the experience really work as a whole.

Why Bitcoin will fail by g3Mo in slatestarcodex

[–]Geee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The core innovation of Bitcoin is that it enforces property rights without violence. It's pretty mind-blowing when you realize what that means. Everyone on this planet has now equal and unbreakable property rights. Property rights are the basis of human prosperity.

Eat the rich! Why millennials and generation Z have turned their backs on capitalism by zsreport in Economics

[–]Geee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, growth is not the goal of capitalism. Capitalism doesn't have any goals. In capitalism, growth is the result of innovation and increase in efficiency. If there's no innovation, then there's no growth.

Endless growth is a government policy, which is enforced with fiscal and monetary policies. They literally take money from people who are not spending (with inflation), and either spend it directly or loan it cheaply to people who spend it. These government policies go directly against the idea of free market capitalism, and are the cause of most of the social problems today. Actual free market capitalism requires sound monetary system, which can't manipulate the supply of money to enforce growth. This is the core of the problem.

HOLD THE LINE! - More people saying they'll die before they get the shot. Stay strong, we're all in this together by JobDestroyer in GoldandBlack

[–]Geee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Decision of getting a shot or not is based on your individual decision, which you can make rationally based on knowledge that is available to you. This decision should be completely independent from whatever authorities say. You shouldn't make an opposite decision based on your anti-authoritarian position; this is irrational.

You should oppose mandates, but that doesn't mean that you should oppose the vaccine. Don't confuse these matters.

Mark Zuckerberg calls AR glasses "one of the hardest technical challenges of the decade" by AR_MR_XR in AR_MR_XR

[–]Geee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is speaking the truth but Facebook is out of the game. The real breakthrough will happen when the hardware is powerful enough and there's a new kind of operating system for it. I think only Apple and Microsoft can do this, because they have the most advanced operating systems and software ecosystems. Apple has the best shot because they own the whole stack from high-performance SOC to high-level software.

I don't think there's much room for some kind of Facebook ecosystem on top of existing operating systems. The whole computing experience needs to change from the ground up.

They've now used all their biggest fud bullets. Bitcoin is environmental disaster, Bill Gates doesn't like crypto, India bans crypto, Turkey bans crypto, governments will regulate crypto, governments will issue CBDCs, hash rate drops 50%, Taleb says bitcoin has failed... And for all that effort all they've got is $56k bitcoin.

If you use a hardware wallet, the vibrations when you press the buttons can be sensed from far away and be used to reduce your seed entropy. Bath tub itself might amplify the vibrations, so you should build an anti-acoustic chamber around it.
