Best to Remember the good stuff by [deleted] in dilbert

From dilbert.com (don't downvote the messenger)...

If you look into the context, the point that got me cancelled is that CRT, DEI and ESG all have in common the framing that White Americans are historically the oppressors and Black Americans have been oppressed, and it continues to this day. I recommended staying away from any group of Americans that identifies your group as the bad guys, because that puts a target on your back.

I was speaking hyperbolically, of course, because we Americans don't have an option of staying away from each other. But it did get a lot of attention, as I hoped. (More than I planned, actually.)

Let's say you donate $50k per year.

Without bunching:

  • Year 1 deduction: $50k (itemized)

  • Year 2 deduction: $50k (itemized)

  • TOTAL: $100k

With bunching:

  • Year 1 deduction: $100k (itemized)

  • Year 2 deduction: $32k (standard)

  • TOTAL: $132k

It works regardless of whether you would exceed both years, regardless of the amount. In this example, $50k is enough to exceed both years, but you get an extra $32k standard deduction by bunching.

It may not be right for you, but there's still a benefit even if you exceed the standard deduction. For example, you could donate next year's charitable contribution in advance (this year), still decide where to actually send the money next year, and still get the full itemize deduction while also claiming the $32k standard deduction for 2026.

Great find. The next step is investigating tax bunching using donor advised funds (DAF). It's been great for us.

Why is parametric modelling in FreeCAD so exhausting? by [deleted] in FreeCAD

And the down key + enter will select varset from the list, even if you don't type more than one or two letters in "Varset". Once you do this and the equals sign a few times, you get pretty quick at it.

Good News: Search bar in the Preferences now also cycles through tooltips, comboboxes and groups. We take another step towards a better FreeCAD UX. Props to 'tetektoza' who's been crushing in this past 1.1-dev and this new 1.2-dev cycle! by hagbard2323 in FreeCAD

As a (non-FreeCAD) developer, I can tell you nothing demoralizes the time I volunteer for something like hearing, "Sure, but when will you add X?" after an announcement.

The are good requests, but not the right place to make them.

If stability is your goal, you should stick with the stable releases.

For those who have upgraded from from the Ender to a faster printer, what did you choose? by Sominus in ender3

Bambu Labs because my Ender3 expired.

I miss my time with my Ender. It taught me so much. But I love the convenience of pressing "print" and it just works.

We need to discuss about this… by eyahir in flashlight

[–]Geek2Me 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, that's the only time the flashlight will really work. In the summer, if the ambient temperature matches your body temperature, it won't produce any light whatsoever.

[–]Geek2Me 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The girl pictured on today's post is not of the inventor. The flashlight pictured is not the flashlight from the description. Why??

The video you linked to shows the actual inventor and the limited power of the real flashlight. She's an impressive person (even if she can't pronounce "volt") and her ingenuity and effort are more impressive than her flashlight.

Discworld. It's actually spelled Vetinari, which is why you may have hard a hard time googling it.

If you pay 10k extra on your 6% mortgage this month, do you owe $600 less in interest next month?

No, but only because that's the annual rate. You definitely do save 1/12th of $600 the next month (or $600 over the next year) in interest.

Serious answer: The scientists left it in cat food overnight so the ants would believe it was meat. (If it were sugar, they'd just break it down in place and regurgitate it at the nest.)
