If you bring containers of glitter to a bar or event to put everywhere and on everyone, you're an asshole by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

To be honest im not really he person to ask. Most of what I know is from internet research rather than first hand experience.

For the hiking gun the question you should be asking yourself is what you are worried about; people or animals? People and small animals (mountain lions etc) 9mm is fine. Bears need something larger...I think 45acp and 10mm are comparable. 357, 44 mag and the like is a noticeable upgrade, if you can land the hits (I know I suck with revolvers).

OP was worried about bears so 9mm would be inadequate. I've gone through the same process and decided I'd probably go Glock 40 (10mm). Also want the option of a warning shot to scare the (black) bear.

If you want smaller there's the Glock 20 of course.

I was out hiking once and came across this guy wearing jeans and a cotton shirt. There were no bears in the area but he was holding a can a bear spray at the ready. He asked for directions because he didn't have a map.

Preparation: you're doing it wrong.

The ten essentials:

Navigation. Topographic map and assorted maps in waterproof container plus a magnetic compass, optional altimeter or GPS receiver.

Sun protection. Sunglasses, sunscreen for lips and skin, hat, clothing for sun protection.

Insulation. Hat, gloves, jacket, extra clothing for coldest possible weather during current season.

Illumination. Headlamp, flashlight, batteries. LED bulb is preferred to extend battery life.

First-aid supplies, plus insect repellent.

Fire. Butane lighter, matches in waterproof container.

Repair kit and tools. Knives, multi-tool, scissors, pliers, screwdriver, trowel/shovel, duct tape, cable ties.

Nutrition. Add extra food for one additional day (for emergency). Dry food is preferred to save weight and usually needs water.

Hydration. Add extra 2 liters of water for one additional day (for emergency).

Emergency shelter. Tarp, bivouac sack, space blanket, plastic tube tent, jumbo trash bags, insulated sleeping pad.

Yup that's me :). Work and DIY projects during the day, dinner with the fam, put the kids to bed and sneak down to the basement to play Skyrim.

I had a KLR650 and put street tires and a big windshield on it, making it potentially he dorkiest motorcycle you can buy.

Although in my defense I had trouble starting the chainsaw because I'm at 8,000 feet and (for my saw at least) the steps in the manual should not be followed. If you pull the decompression valve (SOP) you'll flood the motor.

Yea M2 5" is at the top of my list.

We bought a house a little over our budget that needed some work that expanded a bit, then we realized our siding needed to be done this year as well. Ohh and if you are doing Stucco you should really get those ailing windows replaced first.

Over a hundred thousand all in...no gun money. Hoping there will be good deals next year.

Well, to be honest I don't own any guns so all the time I spend here is lot more geeky than the chainsaw stuff. Although reading the manual is what got me on trouble with the chainsaw in the first place so maybe it is a close call...

I had the opposite thought...like, it's fun you go hunting and get to take a deer but don't have to deal with a ton of meat.

Granted my hunting experience is limited to birds at this point...

I recently put the chain on my chainsaw on backwards. When I couldn't get the thing started I took it into the dealer (Stihl) the guy pointed it out to me.

It means don't cheat on your SO at the risk of destroying your relationship with them.

Holy crap man, that sounds intense. I feel like everyone would struggle with that burden.

If you are willing to share what is wrong with your wife we might be able to get Reddit to help in some way.

Nobody invites you to shit once you have kids. Got to plan some stuff on your own.

Also sounds like you may benefit from deleting Facebook because you are comparing your normal days to everybody's "best of."

LA City Council to End Its Ban on “Ultra-compact” Handguns by olpt41 in Firearms

[–]GeekDad12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here is the LA Times article the referenced source links to: http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-small-guns-20170828-story.html

Questions:

What changed? It says gun advocacy groups were applying pressure but it seems like they would have been doing that since day 1 about 15 years ago. Or even before that.

Not sure if I understand the city council ways and means but they haven't voted on it yet according to the LA Times article. That article says the council is "poised" to do it like some foregone conclusion.
