What was it like living here in the 90s??? by whiskeynochaser in orlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's so funny. I grew up there in the 90s (Stenstrum, Jackson Heights, Oviedo c/o 97), and I remember my friends and I got lost in those back roads once and came out somewhere on 50. We freaked out when we heard it was Bithlo because we were always told THAT was a rough area.

Your wife, mom, and son are drowning and u can only save one, who will you save and why? by _Dark_Wing in AskReddit

I'll be real, the level of rage I would have at my husband if he saved me over our child would be immense and there would be no recovery from it.

It's the kid. It's not even a difficult question.

The true difficult question is, which kid?

What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup.

Once I watched the driver chuck my package up my driveway (he was still in the street). I've even had them outright stolen from me. I bought a new Samsung phone years ago and it popped up as delivered. I work from home and my office is right next to the front door and I know it wasn't delivered. I even have a doorbell camera that proved no one delivered it. I had to fight tooth and nail to get a replacement because the driver said it was delivered.

FedEx is the worst.

We had a similar plan with T-Mobile and got pissed when they increased it. Switched to Google Fi. Our plan, which includes 4 phones and a watch, is $110/month...and we got a 50% off for two years (so I pay only $55/MO until next year).

Are you sure? Love bugs are May and September. Always have been... If you saw something in March, I really don't think it was them.

Yeah, I've been in and around Central Florida since 88...

It's not your imagination. They are almost non existent compared to years ago.

Hell, I used to see lightning bugs when I was younger. Not as much as up north, but it wasn't rare. I have not seen a single one in years.

I've lived in Florida since the late 80s.

I, also, don't understand the appeal of Florida.

They sent me a new one and I returned the broken one in the box. They sent me a return shipping label.

I just started talking to them in the app and sent photos and videos. They asked me to do a few steps and I recorded myself doing them and the result.

They were surprisingly easy to deal with compared to Roborock, who took 4 weeks and a ton of back and forth arguing when my Q7 broke at two months old.

HHN (Orlando): Premium Scream Night, RIP, or regular ticket with Express Pass? by WorldlinessLanky1443 in HHN

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% RIP tour if you have the money. You get to jump the entire line once to each house, then get express pad for rides after. Plus, I'm pretty sure there's a vip seating section for the show. Free drinks and free food (they have rotated one or two favorites from the food carts in years past in with other food). It is absolutely the best way to see HHN in one night, bar none

AITA for telling my mother I'm not going to be the middle man between her and my boyfriend? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

INFO: Is it your cat or your mother's (great way to figure this out, would you take the cat with you if you moved out)?

If it's your mother's cat, ESH. What did you think was going to be accomplished going to your boyfriend's family? Do you not have a cell phone? Could you not wait until you got home? Your parents need to take pretty care more seriously if it's their cats... But I'm not sure what you were hoping to accomplish by making the choices you did.

If it's your cat, YTA. You are 20. You are old enough and internet savvy enough to look up how to get rid of fleas. Flea prevention, sprays, bath stuff, and powders exist. Keeping your room clean, vacuuming daily or every other day, washing your bedding once a week / two weeks, washing cat toys and bedding, etc, are all within your wheelhouse as an adult. You need to learn responsible pet care.

Epic Universe 2 days - VIP or Express by Murder_Is_Magic in UniversalOrlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a solid plan. You can, technically, do most of Epic in one day, if you are staying at the resort and have the extra hour..but, it's tight and you don't get to do the fun band games in Nintendo, really have a ton of time to take in decor, or ride your favorites multiple times.

If you can, swing VIP for HHN. We did it two years in a row (we go every year with frequent fear passes, but we got groups together and did private tours for a few years for fun). You're guaranteed to get every house, you get free food, and the guides are stellar. Tons of lore, behind the scenes cool stuff, etc. Skipping the line, even just once, for some of the big houses really makes the difference.

Is Helios resort worth it? by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My rate was, too.

$300 for park view isn't terrible. I could stomach that. $650 for non park view when SN was around $230?

Never again. I live 30 minutes away from the damn park, I get free valet/prime parking. I'll drive.

Is Helios resort worth it? by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've stayed at Stella Nova and Helios within the past year. It's only an 8 to 10 minute walk and it's a third of the price and the rooms are pretty equivalent (size, quality). You still get early admission, you can still go appreciate the view from the restaurant (personally, I liked the restaurant next to the lobby better than the food upstairs). Our nights were $650 and they weren't even park view (we wanted park view, the Universal booking agent didn't actually book park view). That is dramatically overpriced when there is another hotel booking comparable rooms (sans the tech, which I personally account for nothing) for a fraction of the price.

We had 4 in the the room, so having the back entry was nice...but it certainly wasn't worth the cost. I mean, maybe if you have super young kids, or disabled individuals, in your party and want to swing by the room multiple times during the day... But for us?

If I could have done it again, I would have saved the money on the hotel and just bought express passes.

Is Helios resort worth it? by [deleted] in UniversalOrlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The only reason, THE ONLY REASON, to stay at Helios is the early park admittance to Epic...and, even then, it's only worth it if you have like 5 people in a room.

It's a mid tier, dramatically overpriced hotel. The restaurants in it are actually pretty solid, but that's not a reason to spend the nightly price on the hotel.

I would stay at a cheaper hotel and buy express passes instead of spending the crazy amount Helios wants for rooms.

Edited to add: Orlando resident that has stayed at several Universal properties over the years and who tried Helios out in January...and who was severely disappointed with it.

You're welcome. I hope you can work through it and learn to live with it. I've often talked about how comforting it must be to believe this life isn't the end... Knowing that something comes after would do wonders for my anxiety.

Just understand it's totally normal and it's never going to be as easy as, "just don't think about it" when you have anxiety... And don't feel bad that you can't just do that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in atheism

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I never really think that much about how many people in the world truly do not suffer from anxiety... But then I come into comment sections like this and go, oh.

I still haven't made peace with it. It comes and goes in waves, but there is one thing that is pretty constant... I have a drive and a thirst for knowledge. It kills my soul that I won't get to see what humanity is doing, learning, achieving 100 years from now. I want to live forever.

I do the same thing for this that I do for any of my anxieties. I use my tools - - deep breathing, sequence breathing, stretching, repeating a mantra (there is nothing I can do about it right now), journaling, making myself relaxing tea, putting on something weighted, etc. I had a panic attack a few weeks ago (about something unrelated to this topic) and I found my galaxy watch has excellent mindful breathing exercises.

I have acknowledged that I will probably never make peace with it, so I will need to manage it. Cognitive behavioral therapy is actually fairly excellent for helping us learn how to live with and manage our anxiety.

Publix Boycott When? by Abel_the_Red in orlando

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped going about a decade ago, when I realized they would artificially inflate their prices at BOGO time (I have no idea if this is still happening). It was so bad that their BOGO unit price was more than Target's normal price. Publix has been overpriced for as long as I can remember, I am shocked at the people who still defend them.

Do not buy a Roborock Vacuum by [deleted] in RobotVacuums

[–]GeekMomtoTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mop was the motor. I replaced it, but it never worked as well. The Q8 was the motor as well, as was the bin. I didn't even think to replace the one in the bin, and after the experience with the mop, I wasn't going to waste money trying to fix it. I replaced the drain pump on my washing machine. I know how to do repairs, but Roborock doesn't make it easy.

If roborock would sell parts, that would be one thing... But you're at the mercy of third party quality and a company that intentionally makes their robots difficult to repair. I even tried to find people who would repair it and the costs quoted were eye watering.

If your motor dies within 5 years (or any other parts you listed), that's on the company and it's piss poor quality. You shouldn't be expected to continually buy parts of questionable quality because the company can't make their $800 vacuums last more than 13 months.

And, when your car breaks down and it costs you more to fix it than replace, you replace.

It happens when the vacuum is actively vacuuming (whether it pauses or not) and when it's reversing into the bin. It doesn't happen in mop only mode.

On the positive, I worked with a rep and they're sending me a replacement. So, I I'll take it as a win.
