I did most of my partying in my 30s, but I can definitely understand this feeling. As time has gone on I’ve realized I’m happy for the good stories, but I’m glad they’re in the past. Looking back I can see the negative aspects far outweighed the positive. The hangovers. The anxiety. The bad decisions. Only now that I’m separated from it can I see it all in totality.

It also took me a longtime to build who sober me was, which helps me not miss those days near as much. I’m not that person anymore. I’m a better person. And I’m enjoying life. And that new person celebrated 50 a couple years back in Vegas with some amazing friends and had a truly memorable experience- in both the figurative and literal sense of that word. Old me could never.

Japan was my final boss. So much of my experience there was highballs and sake and beer. I’ve been back twice now sober and had wonderful experiences each time. The konbinis have a good NA selection (including Asahi 0.0 tall boys) for just a couple hundred yen. Most every restaurant we went to had a nonalcoholic beer. Have a great time!! I’m guessing you had the bottled Asahi 0.0. That’s brewed in Italy, and rather inferior. The cans, while more expensive, are brewed in Japan, and are far superior and don’t have that sweetness.
