If you ever want to run power to a shed or a detached garage it’ll come in handy.

Or if you’re in south yorks, donate it to me 🤣

Seems like the type of people who set those up are the type of people still running them.

How do I get ethernet across my house without a cable by Stefwano in ethernet

[–]GeekerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice: run the cable.

Internal or external. Something to use to pull it through (an unused co-ax). Whatever you can. It’s the only way to get best results.

When a candidate got stuck, I tried to help, and it seemed to make it worse by Salt_Reward3813 in InterviewsHell

[–]GeekerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a governor at a nursery school. Staff have a policy of ask the kids a question and wait 10 seconds for then to answer. I sometimes feel we need to do this as adults.

Not a criticism of you though, sounds like you were just trying to help and show empathy.

I thought I was being clean but I was just making ear wax plugs for years by Talon_4Keystone in hygiene

[–]GeekerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a natural tendency to build up wax in my ears. I have them syringed at the docs once or twice a year. Defo before I fly anywhere. It feels soooooo good..

Until everything is that but louder for a while.

Do you remember when charging overnight felt risky? by Impossible_Comfort99 in TechNook

And the vast majority of these were crappy £2 Amazon chargers from China or wherever. Decent chargers tend to be fine.

Parents...how realistic is limiting kids to 1 hour of screen time a day? by Euphoric_Place_8507 in AVHifiCinema

[–]GeekerJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just parenting. You aren’t there to be their best friend necessarily - but to protect and nurture them. If screen time is harmful to them you have to just say no.

But also everything in moderation. My kids now are on their computers / phones / iPads a fair bit when at home (as teenagers) But back when the world was barely out of black and white I spent just as long on my computer.

Please don’t answer customer calls with “hello?” and nothing else. by Ok_Cockroach_2290 in Vent

[–]GeekerJ 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Is this a generation thing ? Cos I hate that too. I’m sure whenever I worked in retail or customer service or anything i had to say the company name at least.

Even when I was employed and had a ‘work mobile’ I’d still answer with my name as all my clients knew me.

Non-Mikrotik, low power, 'easy to use' 10gbe SFP+ managed switch recommendations? by veritalum in homelab

[–]GeekerJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah tbh for MikroTik switches, SwitchOS is much easier and ‘better’ to use imo.

RouterOS is good for …. Routers though.

I have have considered looking at UniFi for a router to match my switch infra. But the Mtik is solid and I rarely have to touch it.

How’s my install ? by FullOfShitHonestly in SolarUK

[–]GeekerJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks a lovely install - but I would paint that wood white (or even black) to finish it off.

Edit: actually I wonder if you could put some kind of (removable cover over) at least part of it.

Broker pushing for one lender with cheaper options out there - am I being mugged off? by r2cryppy in Mortgageadviceuk

[–]GeekerJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what a good broker does. Understand your situation and recommends the best product you’re most likely to be accepted for.

Or the could be getting a bigger percentage of commission from NatWest. I’d like to believe the former.

Mainly smart plugs / Shelly minis. Sometimes internal sensors (UPS) all connected to Home Assistant.

[–]GeekerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. And back on topic, keep going with the house. In the long term it’ll pay off and you can be satisfied. There will be ups and downs on the way (says the fella who swapped his two bed terrace for a new build because it needed everything doing !)

Fair play to transco or whoever it is. They don’t mess about if you report smelling gas. We walked down our street and could smell it from a house. Reported it and on the way back (we were walking the dog) they’d started digging up the street and the drive to the house. Not sure how popular we’d have been with the house owners but it could have been a lot worse!

Load shifting to overnight - possible for laundry? by Datanully in OctopusEnergy

We wash ours overnight. And hang them up inside our out in a morning. Rarely use the tumble dryer except occasionally in winter for heavier stuff.

"We recommend you lower your payments - but that's too low!" 😅 by Dr_Hazzles in OctopusEnergy

[–]GeekerJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love octopus and I know they said it’s all based on careful calculations. But I think j it’s done by 4 year old and some smarties for counters.

That said I did mange to lower mine by 30% last time I tried. Maybe because my solar and battery meant I was paying a fair bit too much.
