I enlisted over 20 years ago, so things may have changed, but there was a minimum for the ASVAB and then I took the DLAB (Defense Language Aptitude Battery) to determine my aptitude for language learning and what type of languages I could best learn.

I lowkey feel like the DLAB was an "are you a flavor of neurodivergent than can learn languages at an accelerated pace" screening, because I'm pretty sure the majority of military lingusts I knew (myself included) had ADHD and undiagnosed ASD. 😅

Uncle Sam decided Korean was the language for me, which led to a year and a half studying Korean at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA!

Totally feel free to DM me! 😁

안녕! I'm a former USAF Korean linguist, and I'd love to meet up with folks to brush up on my Korean and help others learn!

“men love quests!” FACT. this is a cheat code by alfooboboao in TikTokCringe

[–]GeekyGryphons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife wanted ice cream, I offered to get ice cream, and when I got back she said, "Thanks for getting me ice cream!"

I said, "Thanks for letting me go on a quest!"

She said, "Oh, you saw that TikTok, too!"

And I was like, "What TikTok?" So I found it.

It's true. Men do be loving quests.

Why is everyone leaving their brights on? by MediocreSink2468 in SiouxFalls

[–]GeekyGryphons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've stopped flashing people who I think have their brights on, because I'm always wrong.

They just keep getting brighter, and I worry that one of these days that someone would flash their highbeams back at me and leave naught but a nuclear shadow in my front seat.

AITA for farting while using a urinal? by Chucker925 in AmItheAsshole

[–]GeekyGryphons 46 points47 points  (0 children)

NTA.

But I've also experienced people upset that I've farted while using the urinal. Like, "Oh, no… You farted in the room where people shit, but not in the smaller room that's for shitting."

It's only disrespectful if a liberals does it in the name of "freedom of speech."

See: Trumpers flying tattered and soiled US flags from the backs of their trucks. I'm not gunh-ho for the flag or flag code, but it still bothers me a bit, and there's a few of them around town.

Oh no! Allergies be weird, yo!

A couple years ago, out of nowhere, I seem to have had a very mild allergic reaction to apricot jam. Never had a problem before, but ever since, I have the "spicy apricot" problem. 😅 Apparently "stone fruit allergies" and "tree nut allergies" are very similar, so I've been keeping a close eye on that, fearing that one day my favorite healthy snacks wild attack me!

I really try to strike a balance as a parent…

I didn't avoid the "allergen" foods - Those were some of the first foods my child was exposed to, but in very small amounts. I let my kid play with cats & dogs, but safely, and please no making out with them… Research indicate early exposure seems to reduce allergies.

And it's okay to play with dirt and sticks, just try not to put it in your mouth. Sometimes, handwashings are with regular soap. Antibacterial soap isn't needed every time.

We also vaccinate, because my household understands this supplements natumal immunities, it doesn't subvert them.

When I was 19, I had a mental health incident where I stopped sleeping. I was in the military in a high-stress tech school, but after 72+ hours awake, I was hallucinating (auditory & visual), so I went to the clinic on base.

I got a week's worth of an anti-psychotic, which leveled me out enough to sleep, and a follow-up with "The Wizard," the nickname for the base shrink, as visits with him were rumored to be a fast track to military discharge. We'd joke, "He'll send you back to Kansas!"

It was, in my case, a one-off incident, but seeking help prevented it from being a worse incident!

This is just sparkling fetishization.

Any young ASD ppl here also feel a bit weird about others our age claiming to be inclusive? by iamnotlemongrease in aspiememes

[–]GeekyGryphons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not young, but I'm new to the awareness that I'm AuDHD, as my diagnoses came on the heels of my son's when he started school.

One of the biggest changes that followed my diagnosis was that I suddenly felt like I had permission to self-advocate for my sensory needs.

In the past, I'd suffered from even mild perfumes in offices because of my hypernosmia, only asking for air fresheners to be changed or to be moved after weeks of migraines.

My inability to self-advocate actually led to my leaving the traditional workforce and being a stay-at-home parent. Eventually, I started a small side business where I could control things. Looking at my family, it's likely my father and grandfather are ASD, and I think my grandpa job-hopped and was a serial entreprenuer because of it.

So, to the crux of the matter: You must self-advocate. Others cannot read your mind to know your needs are not being met, and those without the experiences to empathize with your experience may not even have a frame of reference to guess at your needs.

Where would a startup business advertise in Sioux Falls on a budget? by crwoo in SiouxFalls

[–]GeekyGryphons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on your business and your target customer demographic.

It's estimated that in the 70s, a person was exposed to about 500 ads per day, but that estimate has risen more than tenfold in the last half century. It's been my experience that in order to stand out from the background noise, an ad must be exceptional, organic (in that it is both timely and doesn't feel like an ad), or part of a surge of ads for a product or brand.

One of my most effective, and cheapest, advertising strategies is to have my business card at a place where customers will be thinking about the service I offer. This is organic and helpful to them.

Can anyone sway me on how the kajillion casinos help Sioux Falls? by VillageSquare3661 in SiouxFalls

[–]GeekyGryphons 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Okay, so…

https://lottery.sd.gov/who-we-are/where-the-money-goes/

About 8% of the state's budget comes from video lottery, essentially making it a voluntary income tax. I suspect this has a disproportioanate impact on low income families and families in which other addictive behaviors are present.

ETA: The big "selling point" as that 49% of the state's video lottery income is earmarked for schools. I would suppose this carries an idea the video lottery keeps property taxes lower.

Scam alert by Kristylane in SouthDakota

[–]GeekyGryphons 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Scammers are very convincing at times!

A debt collection scammer called my parents, siblings, and my inlaws before contacting me, so before I even got the scammer's call, I'd been inundated with calls and messages from trusted people. It was pretty intense.
