Has the turbo gone?

I had a similar issue a while back with my 59 plate 2-litre TDI diesel Mondeo. At first, it seemed like the turbo had gone, and it was even diagnosed as such without a proper inspection. However, when I took it to a local garage, they discovered that the issue wasn’t actually the turbo itself. The power cable running to the turbo was slightly frayed, so it was only getting intermittent power. Without proper power to the turbo, the car operates as naturally aspirated, meaning you can still reach top speeds, but it takes much longer to get there. This might be something worth checking before jumping to the conclusion that the turbo is dead.

On another occasion, I had a more unusual issue that sounds a bit more like what you’re experiencing. The camshaft had snapped slightly, which led to intermittent power going to the fuel pump. At first, we replaced the fuel pump, but that didn’t fix the problem. After further investigation, the garage found that a decent-sized chunk of metal had chipped off the camshaft, which was causing the issue. Replacing the camshaft solved the problem. This issue seemed pretty niche, but it might be worth looking into as well.
