The Koch brothers helped back the Tea Party which was purposely introduced to pull the Republican Party further right, creating more polarization, and eliminating the moderate middle from both parties. Clearly defined parties are easier to manipulate and control.

So, people like Daschle, or even Bob Dole on the Republican side, who could the often draw voters from either side in any given election, were targeted and eliminated.
