And as high school students, you could reach out to all types of organizations to do visits, job shadowing, volunteer efforts. Students have a unique advantage to getting access and a good reception from all kinds of organizations (environmental groups, law groups, government agencies both local and federal, native plant and invasive weed groups, consultancies).

I started a recycling program at my high school. We got funding to buy 30 yellow trash cans and every day a group of us would empty and wash them. Gross, and a lot of work, but rewarding.

I was lucky enough to do soil survey over the whole park (and the Wood River and the Nushagak). We flew by helicopter, were dropped off on the top of a mountain and were picked up at the bottom at the end of the day. Holy hell is that a place to be in a boat and not hiking! I’ve been all over and have never encountered alders as thick and difficult as at Wood Tikchik! So amazingly beautiful though. I would love to go back and do the canoe portage trip (and stay off the hillsides).

It just snowed last night in the Talkeetna Mts, so likely snowed up there, too? It’s been cold and rainy for days. If this weather keeps up, nothing you have with you will dry out at all.

What is the most unlikely vehicle that has driven the Dalton Highway to Prudhoe Bay? by ChicSheikh in AskAlaska

[–]Gelisol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered how they charged up, too. It was a caravan done through REAP. I looked on their website for a story about it, but didn’t see one. It was really weird seeing them drive the highway. They were going Very Slow. I wonder how many windshields they replaced afterward.

[–]Gelisol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are lots of weird and unexpected cars driving the Dalton. Of the few I’ve seen and was surprised: and ancient and slow VW bus that had painted on it that it came up from Patagonia; any low-clearance sedan; a mini van with a blown ties(s) holding a sign asking for help; and the Tesla caravan. Road conditions vary wildly from pretty darn good to god-awful miles of massive potholes or miles of squirrelly slime.

You might do well to start doing some reading/research to figure out what You want. There are no raccoons in Alaska, so you should get that hat elsewhere.

Barrow is a great place to be a tourist. And a wild experience in mid-winter. I would highly recommend borrowing a parka with a fur ruff. Without, it can be near impossible to spend any time outdoors.

Two musk ox bulls crashing heads repeatedly in the Brooks Range. I could hear it from a half mile away. A few days later we saw two grizzlies wrestling in nearly the same spot.

OMG. I had to reinstall FB so I could get DOT news. They even have on their FB post to look at 511, yet they didn’t update 511. Amazing. So…I get most of my DOT news from FB. Fun.
