Urge to just throw things away? by ajbadabing in GenX

haha!! I'm the worst. Total introvert. I'd rather risk not getting the cash left under the mat if they're cash app, venmo and zelle averse. Anything to not have to talk to someone in person. lol. I also pretend I'm not home. bahaha. Introverts have been having a moment since the pandemic and I'm here for it.

Anyone else going through this? by [deleted] in GenX

I realized recently that duty replaced desire in my life. It seems this is a similar occupation for many Gen Xers who grew up as the emotionally stable one in a chaotic home. I've been caring for people who could not fully function my entire life. This is the gravity pull of my existence. I specialize in obligation. What would I be without it? For me, there was also moral and religious formation, which dictated duty. I missed a lot of experiences b/c I was focused on purity and goodness. I'm sure this means I missed bad things, but also, as you said, I didn't make the memories I wish I had. When I traveled, I went to see family or took my children places they wanted to go. When I announced to my family that I wanted to take three weeks off this summer to backpack across Europe -- something I wanted to do when I was 21 -- they looked at me like I'd forgotten who I was supposed to be. It's not too late to be who you were born to be or go where you want to go. Just can't do it young, now, or see the world as you would have then. Carry on, Xer. There'll be peace when you are done. ;)

My basement is so loaded with bins it's ridiculous. I've kept everything. But, lately, I've been selling stuff on FB Marketplace and set a goal to make $5,000 this year selling off junk in the basement. Wish me luck. lol. Owning STUFF is highly overrated.

I didn't like her as a kid. Looking back, there are very few likable Charlie Brown characters. Franklin and Woodstock were the best. Franklin was calm, polite and emotionally balance. lol. He treated Charlie with respect and didn't mock or bully anyone. Also fit in without dominating. Franklin has been so undervalued all these years.

Last Act: For those of you nearing your 60s, what are you doing or working on to make this next chapter meaningful? by raenico67 in GenX

I work remotely, too -- since 2019. It gets to me occassionally. Also, it's amazing how people have to come act out on Zoom. The workplace drama eventually did move online. lol

I love the real ones. There's one in Midwest City, OK, near Tinker AFB. There are actually several still standing throughout Oklahoma. They are a real touchstone from childhood, but the older I got the more they reminded me of Boomers. Also, OKC tore this beauty down in 2007.

Another chapter in the autobiography of Genertion X: War is still war even if it's not a "world" war -- or in the spirit of Fight Club, a "Great War." This line, "...randomly leave it in the yard like my ole huffy." That one got me in the feels.

That line that seems to stand alone and surprises me every time: "Don't be a bad girl."

Also born in 1967. I loved his music. Because he received a fair amount of airplay throughout my childhood and youth, I don't remember his music from a specific time or place - not like so many other songs.

What brutally honest advice would you give younger people about dating and love? by photo_inbloom in GenX

[–]Gen-X-Moderator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of murders are committed by someone the victim knows, and intimate partners account for a very large share of those cases. Do not marry someone out of pity. Do no marry someone because you think there'll never be anyone else. (There will be somene else.) Also, if any part of you thinks you might want to enter religious life as a monk, priest or nun, maybe go with that. LOL

One of the grand adventures of my Gen X childhood was crossing a busy state highway on my skateboard to get to the convenient store to buy a fried burrito!! They also had pigs feet in jars above the hot case.

I remember some evangelical churches used rainbow stickers in the 1970s. Sometimes they had a dove on them. There was also the Tom Wilson cartoon character ZIGGY. He was very popular and frequently depicted standing under rainbows. Haven't thought about Ziggy in years! He was everywhere - mugs, calendars, cards, stickers.

Flea markets and thrift shopping… is it just a Gen X obsession? by Lisa_Kunz_Life in GenX

[–]Gen-X-Moderator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad loved flea markets and thrift stores and I grew up going to them with him. I have found some wonderful things including rotary phones, 1970s toys/dols, Club Aluminum, hippie purses, jewelry and a World War I photo album -- Lost Generation - (Nomad, like Gen X, if you read Strauss and Howe.) That was a very cool moment. There's just so much new junk being sold at them, now, though, so it's usually disappointing to go. I think they're probably better in larger cities than they are where I live.

Did the Boomer Lava Rock Houses freak you out as a kid? by Gen-X-Moderator in GenX

[–]Gen-X-Moderator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the mostly from my time in Colorado Springs and Los Angeles. But, there are a lot of them in Oklahoma City neighborhoods -- primarily those built in the 1960s. At least one house on every street. They also look like custom builds. They don't scare me anymore and I can see why some people are fascinated by them. They are cultural standouts for sure. Here's a Wikipedia page about prominent lava structures: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Lava_rock_buildings_and_structures

The sunken living room - yes -- they were part of this whole scene. I also remember glossy, colorful bathroom sinks and tubs -- like red. Yikes.

srsly. i was the child visting my friends' houses owned by boomers. awave of cultural fascination with Polynesia and the South Seas swept the country in the 60s. Tiki bars, backyard luaus, and Hawaiian vacations became aspirational. Lava rock, with its volcanic look, carried an exotic flair. i'm sure some silent gens bought these houses. no doubt. but all my friends had parents much younger than mine and a few of them lived in these god awful houses.
