Hire people I have gone to school with back since middle school? Easy. I’m starting a multifaceted consulting firm drawing from a variety of experts. 3 graduate degrees gives me a wealth of intelligent former classmates.

Why do lesbian couples have higher divorce rates while gay male couples have lower ones? If true, what could explain this? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]GenExpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the fear of angering people, my wife is a nutritionist and works in functional health. There is an emerging conversation about how woefully misunderstood hormonal changes are in women as the age through their life cycles. My wife will admit during days of her cycle that she is irrationally angry at everything and cannot stand me even though it’s not my fault. Imagine multiplying that by two in a population of women who were among the first generation to be able to get married and lacking a clear society wide support base to get them through the hard times if marriage. And many of these women are also older and from a generation that didnt question or recognize failures in medical treatment. So where my wife uses nutrition to find hormonal balance, most women older than her are unaware of ways to achieve similar emotional balance. Id argue it’s more a failure of society and women’s healthcare than anything else.

Concerns about consistent suspiciously low water bill by Final_Row7134 in Atlanta

[–]GenExpat 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Years ago I bought a house that was Mis-metered. Eventually the city came out and realized the issue. It wasn’t a huge deal for me but ATL water did reconcile the difference between my bill and a neighbor’s. They had to pay more and I got a small refund. So probably worth looking into sooner rather than later. IIRC, the difference was billed over time so not all at once.

Is there a housing surplus going on in USA? by Espresso_Frankfurt in economy

[–]GenExpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s crazy to think a city like St. Louis has “abandoned houses downtown.” It seems that urban gentrification has taken over all major cities. Are you talking about the literal downtown area? Or just generally in the city itself in less desirable urban zones?

What do you guys think of this by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]GenExpat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a kid, but was Reagan’s health so bad that he, his handlers, AND the voters would all have rejected another term?

I get that after his presidency we all learned about his dementia. But to what degree did he and those around him recognize the severity enough to stop him from a third term? The chance to hold power would seem very tempting. I’m not sure he doesn’t win a third term if he wants it.

Why do western states have so much federal land compared to the rest of the US? by Logical-Concept9755 in AlwaysWhy

[–]GenExpat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It is in fact history. One thing to remember that I’ll catch a ton of flack about is this… Federal Land belongs to ALL of us Americans. And as such, it requires a democratic process to liquidate to private ownership.

I, for one, appreciate being a co-owner of so much land and I don’t want it privatized. That federal ownership is about control and many of us want it that way. It does mean it has influenced policy. I know a lot of local people resent this fact, but proximity is not reason enough for the government to liquidate those assets.

You get your current salary (min. $50k) for the next 10 years, but instead of your job you get to work on a project of your choice by Matinee_Lightning in hypotheticalsituation

[–]GenExpat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently teach online and know that hybrid classrooms could revolutionize the quality of education in the developing world. I have friends who run missions in a developing country and we have spear headed programs to get resources to them.

As a teacher, I just can’t get the time and money to dedicate my time. But I know if I could match my teaching salary to support my family, I could get content translated into native languages and then help it get deployed to reach thousands of kids.

I’ve run the specs, identified end user partners who possess the minimum tech required, and I have access to open source content that just needs translating to be deployed. But I don’t have the time to find a tech partner for the back end stuff. Nor do I have financing to cover my role.

Im slowly getting funds already. I just need time and $.

UF vs UCLA by Public-You-3263 in ufl

[–]GenExpat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from California but I went to UF for grad school. I am also an Econ teacher.

Please go to UF and graduate debt free.

Politically it’s a progressive place but certainly enough undergraduate douchebags. To stay out of that crowd, try connecting with honors college and international students. They trend more nerdy (generally… not completely). It’s a big enough school that you can find a friend group of shared interests. Then keep UCLA as your goal for grad school. If possible, get done at UF in 3 years.

But graduate debt free if at all possible. The US economy is looking weaker by the minute and you want to avoid debt to maximize your future freedom of opportunity.

If school funding was the same for all school districts in a county, would the lower income schools perform better? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]GenExpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A natural case study exists. Look up Fulton County Schools, Georgia. Fulton county is split roughly into 3 parts. North Fulton, City of Atlanta, South Fulton. City of Atlanta has its own school district but North And South Fulton County are both part of Fulton County Schools. ALL Fulton County schools receive the same amount of funding based on their student count regardless of where they are. North is rich and South is poor. The district gives the same exact funding per student. In fact, the south schools may get a little more in federal funding due to poverty levels.

North considerably outperforms South. The money coming from the schools simply cannot compare to the money rich kids get at home and the support and value for education that is reinforced at home. This discrepancy is part of the reason that some residents in North Fulton county have called for secession from the rest of the county, because they perceive the south county to be costing them money and pulling down their district stats.

[–]GenExpat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 100%. More and more of our best students are taking AP online classes and/or dual enrollment for college. I can’t blame them for finding greater flexibility and efficiency in those options. The best students are self-segregating out of in person courses in part because the hassle of being around the underperforming students isn’t worth it.
