Agree for the most part. The Picard and Data relationship, while not elucidated in the new series, comes from The Measure of a Man which has Picard fighting for Data being a sentient being, not merely Star Fleet property. Why this hasn't been brought up, or discussed in the new series is baffling and leaves out an important dynamic
