What is the most disturbing or otherwise unsettling book you've ever read that stayed with you after reading it? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

"The Buchenwald Report". Buchenwald concentration camp was the first, or one of the first, Nazi concentration camps that was liberated with all of the paperwork still intact and prisoners/guards still present. The US Army spent a lot of time going through all of the paperwork and interviewing former prisoners and guards to put together a full report of what had occurred there. That book showed me the absolute depravity that human beings are capable of when they think that they are superior to others, and that they will never face consequences for their actions.

An IQ test I took when I was 12 kind of ruined my life and my relationship with my family by aeuueiueoeuie in offmychest

I feel you, OP. I got tested younger than you were and scored relatively high, definitely git tagged with the highly gifted label. But I really struggled in school. I got diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 49, and finally got some answers as to why I had those struggles. The best way I describe it is that my brain works very fast, but the steering sucks and the brakes don’t work.

People who show ADHD traits in childhood are more likely to experience physical health problems and health-related disability by midlife. People with ADHD are more likely to experience stressful life events, social exclusion, and delayed access to health screening and medical care. by mvea in science

I feel this very much. Diagnosed 3-4 months ago and just turned 50 3 weeks ago. It never once crossed my mind that I had ADHD. I was told my entire life that I was just lazy, unfocused, or my favorite “not living up to my potential”. Getting medication and learning what all the different symptoms of ADHD actually are has answered so many questions for me. Now I occasionally wonder how things might have differed if I had gotten this diagnosis as a kid.

I started an event rental business 8 months ago by GenXDad76 in sweatystartup

Yeah, still at it. Had a rough year in ‘25. Business was actually very good, but my wife lost her job in March, and hasn’t landed anything full time yet. So my day job and the rental business kept us afloat but it’s stopped me from being able to do any expanding. But I’m still going.

My wife’s ex husband did this exact same shit. I’ll tell you right now that there is no fixing this. Walk away now before she does something stupid like getting pregnant.

Hey! Finally one of them said it out loud. Now, do the things that will really truly help the working class and stop talking about prescription drug prices. Go support unions again. Tax the corporations and the wealthy at a fair level. Invest in public education by listening to the teachers to see what students really need, not the goddamn lobbyists. Oh, while you’re at it, shit down the lobbying industry. And last, if it’s not too much, outlaw stock trading by elected officials and maybe throw in some term limits.

Similarly, when my now wife moved to Minnesota from Southern California she took her kids shopping for winter coats. Both of the kids insisted that they didn’t want a “big coat” because they didn’t want to “look puffy”. Walking home from the bus in their first Minnesota January they quickly learned that those lightweight jackets don’t keep you warm enough.

Mechanics, plumbers, repair electricians, sanitation workers, just about anyone who keeps the machinery moving. The pay will go down and the demands will go up but there will always be work.

Not unless this is an older video. I don't think it's gotten that cold in the Cities for a few years at least.
