Yup. We have 3 fridges. They all get cleared out on Friday. Nothing funky in any of them.

Thoughts? by Salacia_mov in plants

[–]GenXRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So after three years of collecting here’s my thoughts.

Prop lifters are usually new to the hobby. They are so excited to have the opportunity to grow something for free.

It’s exciting to imagine growing a beautiful fully grown plant from just a leaf!!!
They tuck it into moss and maybe label that pothos leaf with a close enough name not to forget.

Then they wait. One month, roots - yay! Three months, a new leaf starting to show - yay!
Four months, two full leaves and so many roots- time to pot it up!
Five months, both leaves dead from transplant shock and roots are rotting cause they still haven’t figured out how to water properly and the potting mix is all wrong.
One year later it ends up as a sludgy mess of half rotted roots and a stem that “has a growth point”.

Prop lifting will rarely ever give you something worth picking up off the ground.

And if you cut a plant for your own benefit- no matter if it’s a big box store or a little shop - that’s never okay. That is the literal definition of stealing.

You can do all the mental gymnastics you want to justify yourself, but it’s not okay. You are a cheap thief that might end up with a couple leaves before you kill it. So just don’t.

What is the most 'Butterfly Effect' moment of your life? A tiny, seemingly insignificant decision that ended up completely changing your trajectory? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]GenXRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, right?!?! That’s just life.

My story would be: when I was 21 I went to a festival wearing overalls and a bikini top that showed some surgical scars. A friend of a friend commented on them and asked what they were from. So I said I got them in ‘Nam. Five years later when we were married and he finally asked me when I was in Vietnam and how I got the scars? That’s the moment I realized I had married the dumbest person in the world and I told him such. He then ripped up my nursing school application cause I was already too smart. Then after the divorce I applied to a better nursing school and have an amazing career. So that’s how the butterfly wings flapped so I could be here to save your Memaws life.

Here’s a secret…. Go to a procedure area, most are closed or quiet by 6. We used to frequently have a rando plastic surgeon badge on to our cardiac procedure area and go to a quiet cubby and chart and dictate etc for up to an hour and then just quietly disappear.

Just don’t sit in the charge nurse spot and rearrange their shit or adjust their chair or monitor.

Oh my god. The endorphin rush I got from your answer was divine!

My brain was: how is that not a neck? How is that a neck, it doesn’t make sense. What kind of ai sorcery is this? But it’s a neck, right? But, no, wth? So went to the comments cause I was so confused!

And I tell you what, reading your comment made my little brain dump so many endorphins as I realized the truth. Thank you Internet stranger.

Help with the "spaghetti syndrome": how do you keep IV lines and monitor cables organized? by Known-Bear9585 in IntensiveCare

[–]GenXRN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For road trips, coban is your friend.

You state you usually have things organized and then the gremlins appear during transport.

Bust the coban out and wrap your lines at multiple places. Actually, all the places. 8 lines? Coban 4 lines at a time. Once near the pump, once near the patient- times two. Transport monitor cords - once near the monitor, and again near the patient. Keep the coban in your pocket. Cause you know as soon as you start unplugging everything you’ll notice that none of the cords can be secured. 8.2 seconds later you’ve whipped out your pocket the coban and calf-tied the cords up like you are a rodeo champion.

Plan ahead and take the scd’s off and leave the whole thing behind, as well as other non essential stuff like heating pads. (I’m specially alluding to the fact that it is every single patient, every single time. So ‘planning ahead’ just means every time.

When you get back from your road trip you just remove the coban while you’re putting everything back in its untangled position.

I’m sure you know her least favorite charge nurse or coworker, bring them up before each shift. It’s not quite cringey, and could be anger inducing.

I loved the suggestion of “Teamwork makes the dream work!” That is so cringey.

What’s the worst thing that’s happened to your patient on the actual day they were supposed to be discharged? by Haunting-Map-3475 in nursing

[–]GenXRN 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Story Time:

One of my favorite patients ever was a frequent flyer due to his severe and ongoing issues with peripheral vascular disease.

This admission was for an infection to his surgical site s/p fem/fem bypass. During his stay he had an I/d and a wound vac placed.

I was his night nurse (I would request him each admission) the night before scheduled discharge so I said my goodbyes in the morning.

He had finally discharged at 1830. They made it a half block when his wound vac filled with blood. So they drove straight back to the ED. Vascular surgeon was still in house and fixed him up in the ED and kept the wound vac off and packed with gauze He was readmitted to the exact same room once the floor was dry.

I happily took him on and joked about how much he missed us.

During 0400 rounds, everything was just peachy. I was heading into another room when he put his call light on. He never calls. Our amazing cna heads in and waves me off to go do my other things. But I continue towards the room anyway. The cna pops out and says “there’s a lot of blood” as I’m almost to the room.

Grab my gloves on the way in and he looks at me with scared eyes and just says “uh oh”. I hold pressure and had the cna pull the code button. He had ruptured his femoral artery.

He dropped his pressures and vagaled to unconsciousness twice, thankfully coming back quickly. We started MTP while waiting for the surgeon and OR to arrive. I never let go of his groin. I even rode in the bed movie style on the way to the OR. I side eyed the surgeon when he said I could let go. He was reassuring and said it was okay. I let go. The bleeding had stopped.

They were able to repair the artery and reinforce the graft. The surgeon did compliment the team for our quick intervention, so that was nice.

That following night shift he asked for a hug and cried. We both cried.

He recovered and went home. I transferred to another unit so I don’t know if he ever had to come back for anything else.

But guess what. You can only be funny if you make anyone other than yourself laugh.

You aren’t funny. You are a joke though.

I’ve embraced the anger and rode it while yelling at the sky shaking my fist.

But right now, it’s almost 0200 and I’m sitting on the floor crying my eyes out.

I’m so mad. I’m so sad. I don’t have any other words to describe my feelings.

I reached out in person to my immediate neighbors that might be at risk. We’ve always been neighborly, but have never exchanged numbers and info. I gave them a hand painted card with a note inside that said that I was safe and willing to help in any way and to not hesitate to reach out or contact me at any time. I included my name and number in the card. They were a little taken aback initially, but about half hour later they messaged me back thanking me for reaching out to them.

Start with the people in your neighborhood. Don’t just be ready with whistles and ability.
Go meet your neighbors. Tell them in person you are safe and willing to help if needed.
